Mine is missing one of the pen arm mounts, is there a way of getting replacement parts?

No. Unfortunately, spare parts are not provided or available.

what if it doesn't work the first time you assemble it?

Right. We have taken this apart and put it together many times -- there is no problem to troubleshoot. Start working backwards. Is the battery in right side up? Start undoing the robot in reverse -- make sure the connections are good. I hope that helps. I am not the person who assembles the robot -- it's my sure-handed son.

How much of the robot do they actually assemble?

There is quite a bit of assembly to do, but nothing difficult for an adult. I have taught robotics camp using this as a project and found that some of the 2nd & 3rd-grade kids need lots of help while others did nearly all of the assembly on there own. In conclusion, most kids younger than 4th grade will need at least a little help, but older kids and adults should make quick work of it.

Approximately how long does it take a 9 year old child to complete this robot?

Two of my students ages 9 and 10 each built one of these during recess time. One finished after 4 recesses (20 minutes each) and the other took 5 recesses and needed a little help. It depends on the child.
