Tony Evans' Book of Illustrations: Stories, Quotes, and Anecdotes from More Than 30 Years of Preaching and Public Speaking

Sometimes illustrating a certain passage or verse in a memorable way is tough, especially when it's Saturday evening and you have to preach the next morning. This book has helped me numerous times to get over the hump and put the finishing touches on quite a few sermons. The illustrations are concise and memorable, so even if you don't use the "exact" illustration as it appears in the book, they can get you thinking in the right direction so that you can come up with your own, or put your own twist on what Mr. Evans wrote. This book isn't meant as a commentary or exegetical tool, but offers short, concise quips that will help your audience internalize the truths of Scripture.

I can’t read or hear one of Dr. Evans’ sermons and not have an “ah-ha” moment or head slap. I grew up in church and have studied the Bible my whole life and just recently found and fell in love with Dr. Evans’ and his style of teaching. His analogies and stories truly help me understand the Bible so much better and gives me tools to use to share God’s word with others in a modern and understandable way. Thank you, Dr. Evans, you have helped change my life, my relationship with my Lord, and share the Good News of God’s Word with others! May God continue to Bless you and your ministry! ❤️

I wouldn’t call it necessarily a book of strictly illustrations. It is more like a book with some good illustrations and some great analogies. I have used some of these ideas in the pulpit to nice effect. Pastor Tony does a really good job illustrating difficult concepts through short commonplace ideas. Most of the illustrations and analogies are pretty short. Book really isn’t for straight-through reading. It is more like a tool for pastors or a devotional or coffee table short snippets reader. It has been useful to me. Beware though, Pastor Tony is a master voice story teller in his own messages. Very often the reason his illustrations are so great is because he is all in and enthusiastic. So you have to commit to any story or analogy in your own way and pray and listen for the Spirit when deciding what to use.

I think that the book is full of excellent examples and illustrations that can be used by anyone that is a public speaker. I am looking for some particular examples that I have heard Dr. Evans use before but so far I have not found them. I think that this book is good for anyone looking to add flavor to their speeches or sermons!

Pastor Evans maintain to put a spiritual concepts into everyday language, which is very helpful in my work as a Mental Health Peer Counselor. It guide me directions when I facilitate groups at Metropolitan Hospital in NYC where I worked in The Mental Health Inpatient Unit. Even though this is a career, I can say this is true ministry in helping individuals that are dealing with Mental Illness and Substance Abuse that there is hope with recovery. This book is great for individuals that are visual in setting up goals like me.
