Can it support the weight of a TV or does the TV need to be mounted?

The last page of the instruction/installation manual lists the total weight limits (when installed as described with the 6 long wood screws in wall studs): 90lbs on the top shelf; 20lbs on the middle shelves. 20lbs on the lower shelves. Clearly the TV does not need to be mounted. I have a 42" sitting on the unit.

Ok I see people giving confusing lengths,width etc. can someone give me the horizontal dimension only?going from from left to right whats measurement?

48 9/16 inches is the exact width.

Can this hold a 37" LCD TV?

I don't think so. Even with it installed in studs on the wall. We wall mounted tv above it and it allows for cords to be hidden.
