Question 1

we have a 5yr old chocolate lab and he loves to chew on everything, is this made of nice hard rubber? will he stay interested for more than 5 minutes?

It is not hard rubber. More like hard plastic. My (almost) 4 year old borador chewed teeth marks into it within 2 minutes of playing with it. After about 10 minutes, there were slice marks and gouges from his constant chewing. The noise attracts him, but he would rather chew on it. Later we noticed there were blood stains on it, so we took it away from him. If they made the ball bigger so that he couldn't chew it, that might be good. I even bought the larger 5" ball with the extra durable material (paid extra for both). Will probably try grinding down the sharp bits and see what happens. I do have a second ball, but it probabaly will suffer the same fate as the first one. What would be nice if Kong made a version of this toy with their Extreme Kong material around the noise making parts. That is the only toy that has survived chewing from my dog.

Question 2

Was anyone's dog afraid of it at first?

Our 5 month old Corgi is afraid of the ball.  Everytime we roll it to her, she runs away. We tried to pay with her in a room with it and she ended up barking at it every time it went near her.  She has never barked before even at other dogs and we were surprised at her shrill bark.

Your ad states,"flexible" it is not at all flexible. It also states " for all size dogs " It is not,.at all. It is in fact impossible to pick up

I have the same problems the ball I got is not at all flexible and and he can't pick it up so therefore it makes no noise so he is not interested in it at all

judging from the different comments I'm guessing the seller has posted different but similar balls on here at different times and we don't all have the same ball

Question 4

Ball stopped making noise after 5 days. Do you need to clean or lubricate it?

My toy has been outside for several years and still makes noise; not as much as when it was new.  It sits out there year around in snow, rain ,,, I've never cleaned it because it wasn't dirty or quiet and I would NEVER lubricate it.     I don't know if the newer balls are different inside or if the parts are coming from different suppliers.  I do know that mine is hard plastic on the outside and the newer balls are soft material on the  outside.
