Fit and finish
GREAT KNIFE. " For the price and made in China i really was not expecting much. When it arrived i was amazed. Fit and finish was great, nice smooth transition from bolster to scales. The "walk and talk" is very good with about a 7 on spring tension. Blades came very sharp with no burrs and even grind. This will become my EDC. Overall for the price this is very good knife. I realize that with any product there will be an occasional lemon but the one i received was almost CASE quality. For the cheap price i would remmend you give this Barlow a chance.

Great little Barlow knife
Great little Barlow knife. I bought it because it looks exactly like the first knife my Dad bought me as kid 40 years ago. I have no clue where the original knife went, but this is a great replacement. Sharp and durable, great knife for the price!

Functional for carving, not fancy.
Note: Not a Vine Voice related review. Keeping in mind that this knife is not the only Chinese version of the Barlow knife out there, it has a few features that make it work well for many purposes. The working parts are all stainless steel, including the bolsters, liners, blades, blade pivot pin and springs. The handle pins are brass and the handle scales are tapered wood (wider at the end than near the bolster). When I carve, my hands tend to get sweaty and plain unpolished wood is less slick than plastic or laminated wood. The handle has a brass lined lanyard hole. When closed, the ends of the blades are sunk below the bolsters (if you carve for any length of time this is a plus, since many makers leave the ends of the closed blade well above the handle to dig into your hand and cause blisters). The stainless liners are thicker than most of the other Chinese versions of this pattern. The blade pivot pin is stainless steel of a larger diameter than most versions of this design. Both of these details make for a sturdy knife. The blades come fairly sharp but will need to be honed for carving. The longer blade is good for roughing out a piece, while the small blade works well for details. The springs on my particular knife were good and the blades had no play. I would have the longer blade made a bit thicker, for greater comfort in resting the thumb on the spine, but for under ten bucks it makes a good knock around carver. The one I received has reddish brown wood, my friend ordered one and it has blonde wood handle scales. Update 2017: I have used this knife for three years now, and it still functions very well, just as it did when new. I have given several as gifts, and all have been great users. The model number for this knife is 210601. I have seen one of the Pakistan made knock offs, and they should indeed be avoided, as other reviewers have pointed out. Update 8/1/19: After four and a half years of daily work, one of the backsprings snapped on my little EDC Barlow. I am impressed that it made it so long, getting used nearly every day in some way. Update 2/10/21 Second knife has made it for a year and a half of daily use, so far without issues. Update 9/6/22 Second knife now on its third year, discovered the blades hold up to box cutting the recycling longer than I would have thought. It works better than most thicker bladed knives for this, which was a pleasant surprise. Update 12/7/22 Purchased a few for stocking stuffers again this year, I notice that profile the small blade has been modified to be a bit wider and is more of a Wharncliffe shape than a pen blade, the top curving down to a straight edge. Both are improvements for carving details.

Great little knife But
I've owned quite a few barlows the blade is on the softer side but that's good for working knives. And the main clip point blade reminds me a lot of an opinel with how well it slices and is great for food prep. The little pen blade is the stocker of the two and leans itself to harder task like cutting wire. And the handle is the best part with it flaring out it feels very secure and good in the hand. However, the backspring is to weak for heavy work and the knife does not have a half stop. This is the only problem I have with the knife and barlows usually have very stiff backsprings and half stops for safety reasons and longevity of the product this backspring is likely to snap with how weak it is overtime. I wish this knife had a better backspring and half stop it would be a great hard working barlow at an extremely affordable price. But this is a good stocking stuffer for light task like opening letters and boxes given that disadvantage. Overall I would recommend this knife

Low quality mechanics
Knife looks great, is decently sharp. My only issue is the small blade. The spring doesn't hold it fully open, almost like the spring doesnt even touch the blade when open, so it is never firmly open. The large blade works fine. I had them replace the one knife, the small blade moved almost 1/8" with no spring resistance. The replacement had about 1/16" of movement. Only 1 of 4 seems to be correct.

Pleasantly surprised for a Chinese-made knife.
I've collected knives for around 40 years and owned Barlows from the most expensive German made ones to the junkiest Pakistani things of the 1980's. That said, this knife is very good quality indeed for a knife of this price. The handles, bolsters, and pins are nicely fitted, the backsprings are strong, wood is tight-grained and heavy. It would make a very good first pocketknife for a boy, functional and sturdy yet inexpensive enough that when it is inevitably lost it isn't a huge loss. The knife is fairly sharp out of the box but I can get it better. The steel appears to be 420 or 440C, decent steel that will take a good edge. I give it 5 stars at this price.

The knifes construction was tight and the blades. Steel is edge friendly great price too!
My dad prefured Barlow style knives and that said ive also come to appreciate the functuality and utilitarianism no frills basic design! A true working mans knife as well as a great whittler. Wood scales on handle are well fotted and pinned lanyard hole is lined up and by the overall looks and quallity this barlow should provide years of service! Takes a good edge with little touch up! Well worth twice what i payed or more! Will more than likey pass down a couple more to son and grandson as well!

Less than my already low expectations!
I can't believe so many people actually think this is a good knife. I'm almost wondering if this is one of those "if you write a 5 star review for our product we will give you something free" scenarios. Absolutly nothing about this knife is good. I am a big fan of Barlows and have several in my collection. I didn't expect much from an $8 knife and got even less. First off, neither blade was sharp. But the pen knife was out right full with a terribly steep grind. Nothing is flush on it. The springs stick out and have sharp edges, the rivets stick out a little as does the eyelet at lanyard hole and everything has sharp edges that will tear into your hand during use. There arr huge are gaps between springs, "brass" spacers, bolsters, and handle scales. There were chips out if the scalws and brown wood dye on various metal pieces of the Knife. The only positive thing is that the blades were the perfect stiffness. Not so much you'd tear your nail, but not so loose that it would close on your finger. Spend just a few more dollars and buy a Rough Rider, Marbles, or Old Timer Barlow if you are in the market for a good, but budget friendly knife.

Buena,bonita y barata
