Great chain
Great chain. One of the best ever made. Ultegra / xt is top of the line and shimano makes the best bike parts bar none. A great deal! Functions very well for Douglas titanium light speed roadbike.

Great Japanese Parts
Awesome chain and better than what was put on it when it was new.

so much smoother than the chain it replaced
The place where I bought my bike put a cheap chain on it that constantly clicked and strained. When I replaced the chain I used a Shimano to match some of the other components on my bike, and the ride became so much more smoother. Different people have different experiences and opinions about bike chains. But for me this one has been smooth and reliable. Putting it on is not a no-brainer, but with the right tools not especially hard either. I recommend it.

Works fine with my Shimano 8 speed cassette
I like this chain much more than the unknown brand that was on my road bike from the bike shop I hired to provide maintenance. But most notibly, it works very well with my Shimano 8 speed cassette. Arts Cyclery has a great 3+ minute video on adjusting your rear derailure and I find that waxing my chain is so much better than using lubricants.

Good Shimano chain, but KMC lasted longer
The Shimano and KMC chains all shifted well. I couldn't tell the difference. The Shimano was possibly easier to install because I bought the required pin driving tool and don't have a special tool for master links. 3745 miles on my LBS installed Shimano XT/Ultegra CN-HG93 9-speed chain. I bought 2 of these and got 2565 and 3139 miles out of those, replacing as soon as they hit 0.75% wear. The Shimano chain went up in price, so I bought 2 of the (then cheaper) KMC X9.93 chains next. The first KMC chain is now at 5074 miles and just hit the 0.5% wear mark on one section across the master link. I'll replace it with the second KMC chain shortly. Group riding on a hybrid. Compact double 9-speed (Sora 34/50t, CS-HG400 11-34t). No racing, plenty of hill climbing, very little standing.

it comes oiled!
Disclaimer: installing this chain myself was my first step beyond "know basically nothing about bikes despite riding them all the time". So, this review is for the fellow newbies. First of all, it took me a bit of research to figure out what's the deal with chains. I think the "9-Speed" in the product name means 9 rear sprockets and any number of front sprockets: the chain seems to be working on my bike, which has 3 front sprockets. So, if you have a 27 speed bike, this should work for you. I'm guessing this is standard, but I was still pleasantly surprised: the chain comes already oiled, sealed in a plastic wrapper. This is a "connecting pin" (as opposed to master link) type chain, so you'll need a chain breaker tool. (That's the can opener looking thing, as opposed to the set of pliers that's used for master link). I have no real idea what the quality is, honestly, and probably never will, beyond "good enough to make my bike go without problems!" If you don't ride bikes as a serious hobby, it will probably not matter to you either.

It's Shimano - Whats not to like?
Shimano makes a good product. While any company may make a lemon from time to time, Shimano designs are pretty sound. And the 9 speed chain is now decades old in design and has stood the test of time. In comparison to today's more delicate chains, this is a workhorse. I installed this on a 26 year old Trek carbon bike which came with and still uses a triple front cog and 9 rear gears. It may be out of date (I don't know) but it was great to be able to replace an aging part with OEM equipment so many years after its introduction. I've put about 50,000 miles on the bike and been through 4 or 5 Shimano 9 speed chains. This one seems as good as any of the earlier ones.

This item is a genuine Shimano product, made in Japan. Be careful there are many counterfeit products out there that simply don't last.

I just installed this chain, replacing a well worn commuter chain. The photo is to show that the connector pin is included in the package. No need to buy a separate one. I could rate the chain itself - but it’s Shimano - if you’re buying this instead of a cheap chain you already know.
