It is said that astronomy is one of the few remaining fields in which amateurs can make a real contribution to science, and nowhere is this more true than in the field of meteors and meteorites. Although meteors are isolated and unpredictable, it is possible to predict when meteor showers - usually associated with old comets - are due; they last a couple of days, during which many meteors can be observed in a single night. Equipment for watching, counting and even measuring meteors can range from the simplest (a chair) to sophisticated all-sky cameras. What is unique about meteors in astronomical observation is that many survive entry into the Earth's atmosphere and impact the ground - the only easily-analysed extraterrestrial material available to science. What is unique about Richard Norton's book is that it is both a field guide to observing meteors, and also a field guide to locating, preparing and analysing meteorites. In addition to giving the reader information about observing techniques for meteors, this book also provides a fully detailed account of the types of meteorites, how and where to find them, how to prepare and analyse them. It is thus the only complete book on the subject available at present. Review: Fantastic book to study meteorites - I recently dove straight down the rabbit hole of meteorites and this book has been an invaluable teacher Review: A Geologists Opinion - This is an excellent guide for the meteorite enthusiast with a geology or other technical background. The authors delve deeply into the origins, types, elemental compositions, mineralogy assemblages, and advanced techniques for the identification of meteorites. I found this book to be more helpful and complete than other meteorite books that I've read. As a geologist, I found the chapter on optical mineralogy to be particularly interesting and unique. The appendices are full of interesting information. Each chapter has a list of good references. High quality color photos are included throughout. I highly recommend this book.

Not a beginners book
This is the most comprehensive and in-depth coverage of the subject currently available. A scholarly work for those seriously interested in learning all facets of the origin, life and identification of meteors and meteorites. This is not a beginners book on the subject, but, then again, the price should be a clue that this is a textbook and not a simple narrative. Worth the investment if youโre truly interested in the subject and itโs the only book youโll need.

Great Book But โฆ.
If you only buy one book on meteorites then this is the one for you. This is the second copy I have bought to give as a gift, but I received a used copy. My first copy is in much better shape despite having read it and shared it with my grandchildren.

One of the best books about meteorites
This is my fifth book reading about meteorites. i found it supportive, enhancing my knowledge and understanding of meteorites. It'd be a great first book too, for someone exploring the field. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed Sir Richard's lectures and now his book
Enjoyed Sir Richard's lectures and now his book. Would be better with a spiral binding for field use. Many detailed pictures for identification purposes. Detailed descriptions and explanations. While this advertised as a Field Guide, it is as much an introductory resource with chapters on observing and basic information on meteor showers. Advanced indices provides more sophisticated information. Another section on market value for meteors (which I've seen in another paperback) is also recommended. As are other books by this author, this field guide should be required reading and once it is waterproofed and a spiral binding added, a required carry item.

Excellent 'must read' for those interested in meteorties and astroids.
Everything you could want to know about Meteors and meteorites. Includes explanations covering the likely stellar sources of meteors, historical astronomical sightings and theories, modern space probe data, meteorite types, composition, historical reports, world's largest meteorite finds, and so on. As it turns out, the largest meteorite found in North America was found 15 miles from our home in the early 1900's. Its ownership was contested and ended up in court.

Serious Meteorite Search & Science
A lot of detail here, some not specifically related to meteorites, but excellent scientific background. I would recommend other books, such as Meteorites, by Caroline Smith, et al, for the beginner. Norton & Chitwood go much deeper into the science and specific methods of searching for meteorites. Handily they include a Glossary so you can look up frequently-used terms that they throw around. An excellent book for someone getting deeper into meteorites.

A must read on a fascinating subject
Bought this book after it was recomended by Eric Twelker from The Meteorite Market ([...]). I love reading about astronomy, the space program (wichever country but mostly the US and European ones), space exploration, cosmology and physics. I only recently been interested in meteorites after learning you could buy one while visiting the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. It is a fascinating subject having to do with the history of our solar system from it's beginning but with scientists having the technology to learn so much about them in the last century and more so in the last decades. I would recomend this book to anybody who wants to know more. It is full of information and well written.

Best guide ever
A well planned out volume on how best to find, sort out and test meteorites to confirm they are. Many excellent tips on classification and safe storage.

Sehr genau und interessant
Obwohl das Buch schon seine Jahre hinter sich hat, sind die Beschreibungen noch immer aktuell und gut strukturiert geschrieben
