Solid design and construction; E-Z to install....
Very happy with my Pentair IntelliChlor! If this one lasts as long as our last one did, I will be ecstatic! After our original Pentair unit slowly faded beginning mid-summer 2014 (cell indicator light continuously flashing), it was still able to maintain chlorine at proper levels for the remainder of the season and even limped along over the subsequent winter (we live in the sunny south and don't winterize our pool). However, at start-up this year it was finally done--even blew the fuse in the Power Center. After replacing the fuse and ensuring I couldn't squeeze any more life out of our original unit, it was a no-brainer deciding to buy another IntelliChlor: 1) E-Z repair--remove and replace (using existing Power Center); 2) cheaper than changing systems (again, same Power Center); and 3) was very pleased with original unit that kept our pool beautiful for nine seasons (Did I mention we don't winterize? Pump runs year-round, less operating hours and reduced chlorine output selected on unit, but runs all winter) The only slightly picky technical thing I would mention is that the Control Panel (where indicator lights are located) will be "upside down" when installed in correct flow direction due to a Pentair redesign to support vertical mounting of the unit. Read online elsewhere that it is possible to "flip" the control panel but chose not to because I didn't want to risk damaging the housing; and besides with our pump configuration it's still easy to read. Also have to mention the quality construction of this unit matched the quality of original installed with our pool (pleasant surprise when replacing an expensive equipment item). And the streamlined functionality of this unit, evidently part of the redesign, would seem to indicate Pentair invests in and strives to improve their product line. Unless something unforeseen happens--I'm a dedicated Pentair customer!

Unbelievable
I had a Jandy AquaPure. Worked great for 1 year. Worked ok for the 2nd year. After two years, couldn't produce enough chlorine on max setting with the pump running on max flow rate for 9 hours a day. Replaced the Jandy with a CircuPool SJ60 . Couldn't produce enough chlorine no matter how long I ran the pump (0.5 ppm of chlorine was the max I ever got). Replaced the control unit. Couldn't produce enough chlorine. Replaced the salt cell. Couldn't produce enough chlorine. Bought this Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 and its Power Center on Amazon and returned my CircuPool. Installed it in the exact same location as the previous two sanitizers with the same exact electrical wiring (240 VAC). Produces more than enough chlorine on the lowest output setting with the pump running for just 4 hours a day So I'm barely taxing the salt cell and only running my pump only enough to filter the water and allow the floor cleaner to do it's job and I can barely keep my chlorine level below 6 ppm. I had to brush my pool twice a week for the last year while I dealt with these other products. I haven't brushed my pool since the day I installed this one and the water is crystal clear. I am absolutely stunned. I wish someone had written this review before me.

this chlorine generator works great
I've only had this working for a couple of weeks, but so far I could not be happier with it. It took the installer 1.5 hours to put it in so minimal installation charges. The salt to run the system is very cheap especially compared to buying chlorine pellets and granular chlorine for shocking. There has been zero maintenance; I just look at the indicator panel every day and all the lights are green. (Another plus, I'm red/green color blind but can tell what color the light is just by its position, and there's a label next to each one telling what color is in which position.) Best of all the water in my pool feels good and my wife says it doesn't seem to be as hard on skin as using the chlorine pellets. My pool guy recommended this salt system and told me that I could buy it cheaper from Amazon than he could buy it wholesale so I bought it from Amazon and paid him for his time to install.

Replacing Pentair IntelliChlor IC40
Our pool is 2 years old and during the winter the power unit came off the wall and damaged the plug from the IntelliChlor IC40. The people who built the pool and installed all the hardware said that Pentair did not make a replacement plug and that I'd have to replace the IntelliChlor unit in total and quoted a price above $800 for a new unit. I lowered my rating of the IntelliChlor to 4 stars because there is no way to replace just the plug. I bought a new IntelliChlor for a little under $500 at Amazon. I read the reviews on Amazon and they were very helpful. As suggested I took pictures of the orientation of the old unit to ensure I had the flow arrow pointing in the correct position and took note of the location of the debris adapter and the O rings. I was able to unscrew the water line connector on both ends by hand (the installer had followed directions and the fittings were hand tight) It took 30 minutes to read the manual (most important part is about the Leds and what they mean). I switched out the old unit and installed the new unit in less than 10 minutes. As the manual says, turn off the pumps and ensure the IntelliChlor has the power off (I turned off the unit at the circuit box). The new unit easily slid into place and I screw the connectors at both ends (used the old connectors -- they showed no wear) After connecting the unit to the power unit I switched on the pumps and the power unit for the IntelliChlor. I verified that there were no leaks at the IntelliChlor unit. But the Leds didn't come on. I'd read on Amazon that the power unit that the IntelliChlor plugs into has a fuse. Read the power unit manual by Pentair -- it was not very helpful. It trouble shooting section it mention that the fuse was a slow blow 10 amp fuse but didn't tell how to change it. Amazon Answer to Customer questions came to the rescue. There was an answer that said that the fuse was a thumb type (wasn't sure what this meant at time) and that the fuse would come out of the bottom of the unit. There were several comments about customers who had to replace the fuse and had to purchase a new fuse holder after attempting the change the fuse. I used a small screwdriver to remove the fuse (put the blade in the slot of the fuse holder, push up and rotate and the fuse will come out. The fuse holder holds the fuse tight (very bad design by Pentair). The fuse twisted off as I took it out. Fortunately the top half of the fuse came out and didn't stick inside the holder. The bottom part of the fuse (the part that the screwdriver slot in it) had the bottom part of the fuse stuck in it. Based on the Amazon reviews I knew that fuse end would come out but that you had to be careful to separate if from the holder. I finally got it out with a small metal pick. Put in the new fuse and turned on the power and the IntelliChlor was working (Led lights were on). The salt light were blinking, but I recalled that I'd read something about this state in the IntellChlor manual -- back to the manual to discover what the blinking was telling me. When the IntelliChlor unit is initially turned on the light blink for two minutes. Bottom line, all well and good. Next step is to have the pool water tested to determine how much salt to add (last year after opening the pool it took about 500lbs for our 25,000 gallon pool.

Just replaced IC 40 from 2014.
My pool was finished Oct 2014. Lately the green light kept flashing, indicating “check cell”. This means no chlorine is being produced. I acid washed the cell but it didn’t help. I just finished installing the new Pentair IC 40 cell which was delivered in two days with amazon prime. Install is very easy, no need to pay someone to do it. Unscrew both ends of the old one and set the new one in its place. If you don’t line it up right you will think it is tight but when the pump is turned on it will leak. Just lift up on the cell to help center it better tighten some more. The power cord for the cell simply plugged in at the bottom of my pool electrical panel. That was the hardest part, plugging it in is because there are 4 pins in a square pattern. They are numbered 1-4 so you just need to match up the numbers. It’s just for me my close vision is gone and the numbers are very tiny, black and underneath the panel. The ones on the plug were easier to see. Once it was installed i let it run for ten minutes and all the lights were green, nice! I put the water test kit vial up the the pool outlet spout and it was bright yellow when testing for chlorine. Now let’s see how long this cell lasts. I will say I took my pool water in to be tested and it was very high it calcium. They recommended draining and refilling the pool to bring the calcium level down. This will help the life of the chlorinator.

The warrenty is bogus.
This unit failed after two years of moderate use. This was a replacement unit for an identical IC40 so all I had to do was unscrew the old unit and attach the new unit and then screw on the new unit and then plug it in. The new unit failed after two years. I then called Pentair and they told me two things. 1- in order for them to do anything I had to have the pool water professionally tested- although I told them that there were no changes that would have caused unusual pool chemistry issues. and 2- was not installed by a professional pool installer so the pool installer I use for opening a closing the pool could not help with the warranty. I read online that the flow switch of these units frequently fail and even the Pentair rep said that this was the most likely cause of the problem. The only recourse I have is to order a new flow switch and pay for this switch since Pentair was not going to send this to me without me first spending money on chemical tests. A clear chicken and egg issue. If Pentair truly was customer centric they would have sent me the switch to fix the issue. But their real goal is to create a warranty that cannot be used by a do-it yourselfer. Just a marketing ploy that puts them in the same line with a lot of other companies that don't care about quality or customer service- I'm talking about you Wells Fargo. If you buy this just be forewarned- the warranty is for getting you to buy the product- not to protect you from their faulty product. Another slimy company that just wants to go short term and not build customer relationships that last for years.

Works great!
Clean the internal fins with acid to avoid decrease in output and erroneous error message for flow. Works flawlessly. Wish it could be controlled by the IAquaLink app.

VERY GOOD PRODUCT!!!
Easy to install to replace old IC40 which lasted well beyond 6 years. I don't know exactly how long it lasted because it was already installed when I moved into this house. I NEVER cleaned the old one and it worked perfectly until about a week ago when the "check cell" light started flashing. I cleaned but nothing changed so figured old unit wore out. I unplugged and unscrewed old unit, screwed in new unit, and plugged it in. It started generating immediately and has my levels back up to normal quickly. I highly recommend this unit for any pools less than 40,000 gallons. My pool is 29,000ish and this unit will crank up the chlorine levels well above what the test kit can monitor (6-7ppm). Nice that I can have high chlorine levels with no smell and no burning eyes. I only add acid as needed and occasional stabilizer. I have not been compensated at all to write this review. I bought the item just like any other customer. I am not a pool professional or an electrician. This unit really is easy to replace existing unit and not particularly difficult to install from scratch if you have basic plumbing and electrical skills.

Satisfaction totale.

Good salt water chlorine generator.
Works great! Don't forget to get the Pentair 520556. Plumbing note: the connectors for this unit are 2" so you'll need to get reducers if you have 1.5" plumbing.

Works great!
This is my second Pentair Intellichlor IC40 salt chlorine generator. The original IC40 functioned perfectly while it lasted. However, it lasted only four seasons - which was a much shorter life than I had expected. With the new IC40, I plan to diligently shut it off for 12 hours after each time I add any kind of chemicals to the pool, and perhaps I will disconnect it and bring it inside for the winter - and hopefully I will get a longer useful life out of it. Buying online from Amazon was the only way to go (i.e. the local pool contractor was not helpful).
