It's just the "gun" (applicator). Tip: When you choose the tape, be sure you know which tape is archival and which is not, and what is best for your particular project. can Adhesive transfer tape be used in place of packaging tape to seal boxes for shipping? Similar to USPS Priority Mail Boxes that self seal.

No. This dispenses a stronger variant of Post-It-Note adhesive. I use it to post shooting range targets onto a cardboard backing. Since the adhesive is not permanent, I can pull a used target off and stick a new one on. What you are looking for is clear 3M packaging tape which is quite good. There are a variety of dispenser options, including a 3M tape gun. If instead you want to paste down the flaps of a cardboard box for shipping, use a hot glue gun.

do you need the adapter or can you fit 1/4" tape in the gun as is? if you do need the adapter how hard is it to get it in & out? thanks!

I only use the 1/2 inch tape so I don't know. Sorry!
