Does this work on African American hair?

Question 2

Is this color an actual red or is it maroon as one reviewer said (and loved that it was maroon)?  i do not want any maroon or purple, just red.

I have read a lot of the questions and reviews on here about this red color being more of a purple. Seems the blame is being put on the manufacturer of the color. You can look at the back of the box and it will show natural color examples and then what the new red will look like after the dye is applied. The same scenario applies here to the different color combinations of makeup. Those boxes only give a few color examples when there is an array of natural hair colors, hence the color level number. Also, if you have very dark hair then the red can only show so much. If you seek to have a bright red color with dark hair then you will most likely need to lighten first. You also have to keep in mind what happens with the mixing colors. For example, Ash blonde sometimes looks green because it does not mix well with the original color. The color spectrum applies here so always research what you are mixing with your own color, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR HAIR IS ALREADY PREVIOUSLY DYED, because some colors if mixed together will not give you the results on the model on the front of the box. My niece tried bleaching her hair and it turned out a very bright yellow. When I went to sallys to get the stuff to help her get it back brown I chose a mid level brown but I also bought red and did 1:4 ratio with the red being the 25 percent added to the brown. This balanced out her new brown perfectly!

My hair is dark black, will it work or I have to bleach first? th x

Is it black brown like the last picture on the back? That's usually how I can tell if a color is going to be too light or dark on me. If your hair is very dark, the red is probably going to show up faintly, like in the sun or bright lighting. I'm wary of at-home bleaching processes, but if you are hoping for more of the red, you will probably need to lighten first. If you have previously colored your hair though and that's why it's dark, I would pick up Color Oops Color Prep. It will release the previous coloring molecules before you color with a new color. It's a long, stinky process, but I do that when I am changing color. Hope this helps.
