One of the necessary books for grade 1 piano students

Well it works out at around a quid a page. There's not a lot here. Just exactly what you need to know straight from the horses mouth. Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? I really feel they should include at least partial access to the specific grade you bought in the app rather than advertising the app (for grades 1 to 5) on the back. I know it's only scales but I wouldn't mind hearing an A minor melodic played correctly before I butcher it until I see my teacher at my next lesson. We live in a world where the tech/app part of most things are an adjunct to the thing you purchased or vice versa. I recall getting guitar books back in the day that had little floppy LPs on them and then online MP3s. ABRSM aren't a small cottage industry business and could do with a good look at their technical strategy really. Will I go on to buy the app? Well yes! It's cheaper on a per grade basis by far and I then have no need or interest in buying the book despite the book being my preferred consumption media. Would I have bought the book then paid a couple of quid for the app and grade 1 access? Very yes. When I am finished with mine I will find a way to donate it to a beginner. There must be hundreds of thousands of these made and sold since 2021 and used is rare and where it does exist not far off the price here. So it does exactly what I want it to but I don't have much confidence in my renditions until corrected or shown so for now it's off to youtube to be sure I'm not inventing new scales. Even just a link/QR code to a video of it being done properly wouldn't have killed them and they can still have their app.

All of the content in this book is printed on two sheets of paper (four pages total, because they’re front and back). For nearly $15, they’re charging you the going rate for a full novel for something that you can find freely online. ABRSM’s website will tell you what scales you need to know for each grade, and you can Google sheet music versions of those scales because it’s not like they’re proprietary. Learning piano is expensive enough with the cost of weekly lessons and needing to purchase the sheet music for the songs you want to learn. Don’t spend more than you need to on something that won’t provide a good return on your investment.
