Byzantium lasted a thousand years, ruled to the end by self-styled 'emperors of the Romans'. It underwent kaleidoscopic territorial and structural changes, yet recovered repeatedly from disaster: even after the near-impregnable Constantinople fell in 1204, variant forms of the empire reconstituted themselves. The Cambridge History of the Byzantine Empire c.500โ1492 tells the story, tracing political and military events, religious controversies and economic change. It offers clear, authoritative chapters on the main events and periods, with more detailed chapters on outlying regions and neighbouring societies and powers of Byzantium. With aids such as maps, a glossary, an alternative place-name table and references to English translations of sources, it will be valuable as an introduction. However, it also offers stimulating new approaches and important findings, making it essential reading for postgraduates and for specialists. The revised paperback edition contains a new preface by the editor and will offer an invaluable companion to survey courses in Byzantine history. Review: A masterpiece! - A real masterpiece! Review: Extraordinary synopsis - You might say that reading byzantine histories is something of a hobby for me; I've read many in the last decade. This particular compendium is an exceptional and delightful read. Having multiple authors write on each topic adds such depth and insight. Several writers go out of their way to refute outdated concepts with the best in new research. A must read!

Fantastic Byzantine Empire book.
Excellent book full of content all about the empire. I highly recommend that if the Byzantine Empire is a perennial interest for you, you start with this book. This work gives you such a comprehensive overview that you will have a better understanding of where you may want to dive further into the history of this amazing and unique empire. Itโs a wee bit on the pricey side but itโs far and away worth the money. This amount of knowledge I would have paid a substantial amount of money for. The price point is a steal.

Perfect.
The content of book is perfect. Already in introduction there are explained the basic relation inside the empire. UPS is the worst transport company, especially in Czech Republic. They have severely damaged the parcel, one time even with content.

The Roman Empire in the west fell in the mid 400s. It continued in the guise of the Eastern Roman Empire from the mid 400s to the mid 1400s . The Eastern Roman Empire was also known as the Byzantine Empire. The Roman Emperor Justinian was just after Rome fell in the late 5th century but was also one of the first of the Byzantine Emperors.
