A Mother for Choco (Paperstar) Review: Great book for adopted children! - I bought this for our 5 year old adopted daughter. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, while my husband and I have brown hair and brown eyes. We get comments often, and I know it bothers her. This book is so perfect for getting the sweet message across that you donāt have to look like your mom in order for your mom to be your mother, and for her to love and care for you. At the end Choco found his forever mama and she has a bunch of kids that are all different types of animals. My daughter loves for me to read this to her, and she always smiles and hugs me at the end of it, every single time. This book shows the beauty of a mixed family. We have 2 bio, and 2 adopted children, and this book has become a staple in our home. Review: Favorite - This is one of our favorite kids books. We have two adopted children and it is such a beautiful story for that specifically. I thought I was getting the board book but thatās okā¦paperback tells the same story.

Perfect book with a great message
I bought āA Mother for Chocoā board book for my three year old. Since my three year old has been reading his big brotherās paper back copy I wanted him to have his own copy to preserve the older paper back. The board book just arrived today and we have read it four times already. I love the perfect size and brilliant colors. I have pictures of the board book with the original paper back as well as the board book in my toddlerās hands. As you can see the well thought out size. Would highly recommend this book to anyone. My three year old doesnāt use much speech to communicate but one thing he does ask for is āmother for Choco!!ā At bed-time.

LOVE....LOVE....LOVE this book!!!
LOVE....LOVE....LOVE this book!!!! This is the BEST book ever to help introduce young children to the topic of adoption. I adopted my son when he was just 12 months old and I wanted he to become familiar with what adoption was and understand that being adopted was a GREAT!!!!! I want to always have an open and honest relationship with my son. I want him to able to come to me and ask ANY questions he has about his adoption. It is very important to me that my son ask me about adoption and all the particular in's and out's of his adoption. All adoptions are unique and I wanted my son to grab his story and feel good about his past as well as his future!!! HIGHLY recommended to anyone who is blessed to have adopted a child!!! Five Stars!!!

Cutest Story
I bought this book for my 3 year old, who's adopted. We haven't talked about her about the adoption yet, but wanted to start introducing gently, the idea of adoption. This book is so darling and introduces the idea that that not all children need to look like their parents. My 3 year old loves this book and asks that I read her to her 2 or 3 times in a row. The illustration and story line is so cute.

A gentle introduction to adoption
This is an amazing story, gentle and sweet without being blatant. I have loved books my whole life, and now I get to share them with our daughter, whom we adopted from China. Books such as the Suess classic "Are you my Mother?" take on a whole other tone when your child does not look like you. But then you can find books like "A Mother for Choco" and the world seems a little brighter! Our daugther is 3 now, and she still loves reading this book. We have already begun talking about her birth story, using this book as an opening. She began the discussion by saying, "Mommy, you have curly hair, I have silky hair, but I'm still glad you're my Mommy!"

We Love This Book!
Another great book to help explain adoption, particularly transracial adoption, to very young children. Little Choco is all alone in the world. God only knows what happened to his first mother. In any event, he's looking for a mother who looks just like him, but alas, cannot find one. Mrs. Giraffe doesn't have wings, Mrs. Penguin doesn't have plump cheeks, Mrs. Walrus doesn't have striped blue feet. He sees Mrs. Bear picking apples and he KNOWS she can't be his mother because she looks nothing like him. He starts to cry and lo and behold, Mrs. Bear mothers him. She kisses him just like a mother would, she hugs him just like a mother would, she cheers him up by singing and dancing with him, just like a mother would. Eventually, she invites him home for some apple pie. Turns out, she has some other children, a baby hippo ("hippy") and a baby alligator ("allie"). Choco decides to stay for apple pie and more, happy that his new mother looks just the way she is.

Beautiful Adoption Book
I love this book, it is one of a couple books I bought to read to my son, who is adopted, to help normalize the idea to him that it's ok to have members of the family looking very different, that what matters most is the love that's there. I found that especially meaningful because it was important to me that he start to feel that in a non-racially charged way, because the day we adopted him, our family became bi-racial, and while I know there will be people who have opinions on that and will share that with him, and may even share that with us, to me, none of that has ever mattered. The day he was placed in my arms and every day since all I have ever felt for him is the deepest of loves, and I love that this book provides a foundation for giving voice to that kind of acceptance.

The story of Choco is of a bird (of unknown type) and his search for a mother who looks just like him. Adults do argue that the book is about trans-racial adoption but I am unconvinced that young children think in this way. For my daughter (who is now 2 1/2 and was not adopted trans-racially), its simply a story of one cute but rather sad little bird looking for his mother. Ultimately it's a simple, if slightly oblique story of adoption. The real question is whether your child will like the story. I can only say that my daughter loves the story of Choco. It was the first book my daughter wanted me to read to her at night and, it was at her insistence that I then read it to her every night for four months. For my daughter the regular repetition of Choco was probably comforting, I am not sure I can echo her sentiment. Given my daughter's view, I am a strong advocate of the book. However I am delighted that in the last three weeks my daughter has finally stoppped asking for me to read Choco at bedtime and is wanting to hear new stories.

My daughter loves this book. She is still learning about her own story of not living with her family of origin, and she has asked to read this multiple times since we got it about a week ago. It nicely explains that not every family looks the same, nor do we always look like our parents.

An incredible, heartfelt book. I recommend for any kid to learn that families can mean different things to different people. It is an example that love is blind.
