A new edition of one of the greatest allegorical stories ever written. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read A masterpiece of the English Puritan tradition, The Pilgrim's Progress is rich in its imaginative power and its vivid and heartfelt language. It recounts the story of Christian, who appears to the author in a dream, and his journey to Heaven through the trials and tribulations of life. He meets many like-minded pilgrims on his way, such as Faithful and Hopeful, but before they attain their goal they encounter the Giant Despair and the River of Death itself. Translated into more than one hundred languages, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to have an immeasurable influence on English literature. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review: waited way to late to read this - A profound book if you are a Christian, great depth and clarity at the same time. Very appropriate and timely. Review: God's redemption and love - The Pilgrim’s Progress is a classic that mirrors the life and struggles of the Christian faith. I’ve read the book, but this was my first experience with an audiobook, Pilgrims Progress: Updated, Modern English, narrated by Mark Christensen. What fun! I laughed and journeyed with the voices of Pliable, Obstinate, Mr. Feeble-mind, Piety, Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Evangelist, Despondency, Mr. Honest, and Giant Despair! Several of the voices reminded me of people I’ve met during my travels, and it was comical how their faces appeared in my imagination and made the classic tale more relevant. This powerful and allegorical novel has become more meaningful with each reading and listening experience. Like an onion, the more exposure and study time I spent with the text, the more I uncover, the more profound meaning or underlying doctrinal beliefs spur my thinking in various directions, depths, and possibilities. I appreciated the main character, Christian, who carried his burden for most of his life. He left family, friends, and comfort to follow Evangelist and God’s leading toward Heaven. He held his burdens longer than others who grew up in the Christian faith. Still, Christian’s faith and determination carried him onward throughout the narrative and journey of The Pilgrim’s Progress. God’s redemption and love brought His follower to the end—The Celestial City—because Christian followed God and stayed on His path. What a glorious day!

The Real McCoy. Penguin: ISBN-13: 978-0141439716
The text is NOT in modern English. In a chapter captioned 'NOTE ON THE TEXT & ILLUSTRATIONS', the Editor, Roger Pooley explains that Bunyan's work went through several revisions, and discusses the approach that other scholars took regarding Bunyan's text. He states: " I have decided to base my text on the last edition published in Bunyan's lifetime, the tenth edition of the first part, and the second edition of the second part, Both published in 1688. This has the advantage of preserving all the changes in the text and marginal notes that Bunyan may have overseen….” And: “ Should an editor modernize Bunyan’s text?...I am sympathetic to such ambitions (and suspect Bunyan would be too) but they are NOT mine in this edition… ” This book has many of the charming drawings that appeared in the work in the late 1600’s, including the ‘Sleeping Portrait’ of Bunyan by Robert White (1679) This complete edition has the scripture side notes. It has lots of notes and a list 'For Further Reading'. This paperback " weighs next to nothing and will ‘ go ‘ anywhere. I also highly recommend The Banner of Truth’s hardcover cloth edition ISBN 0 8515 1259 3. " I am going to my Father's, and though with great Difficulty I am got hither, yet now I do not repent me of all the Trouble I have been at to arrive where I am. My sword I give to him that shall succeed me in my Pilgrimage, and my courage and skill to him that can get it . . ."

Love this book and love this version
Great version to read. If you haven’t read this book, you should put it at the top of your reading list. The books themselves arrived in great condition. The edges of one of them was a little worn but I suspect that was due to the book sliding around in the shipping box.

good seller
the book was good, but the language and writing style isn't something I understood very well. Had to read it for class and ended up reading SparkNotes, because that was more understandable to me. The tale is good and if you enjoy Shakesperan style writings then you will enjoy it. seller was good

Of its Time, In a Good Way
This is the story of Christian, who, fleeing the City of Destruction, goes on a pilgrimage to the Celestial City, meeting on his way such people as Hypocrisy, Mr Worldly Wiseman and Pope, and facing such trials as the Slough of Despond and Vanity Fair. Then in the second part, his wife Christiana (of course), sets off to join him. She has an easier time of things, although it is made more explicit that the destination of their pilgrimage is death, which is a bit disconcerting. You know, I think there might be an allegory here.... In fact, the remarkable thing about this book is that it manages to be engaging despite being so blatantly allegorical. Bunyan's style is passionate, but admirably plain and easier to read than some of his contemporaries. This is despite the work being a collage of biblical allusions and quotes, in a fashion that foreshadows T.S. Eliot and Bob Dylan (except Bunyan provides references). Whilst you don't need to be a Christian to enjoy this, you do need to be interested in Christianity, the intellectual currents of the seventeenth century, or the history of English literature. Bunyan writes from a very particular position. The Penguin version comes with the usual notes and introduction, and some nice illustrations from the late sixteen hundreds.

Must read for every Christian
The Pilgrims Progress is a must read for every Christian. John Bunyan wrote an allegory about the Christian life, and the difficulties that a Christian will face. We follow a men called Christian, he goes on a pilgrimage and he faces many difficulties throughout his pilgrimage. The difficulties and other things like faithfulness are described as Persons that he meets on his pilgrimage. I don’t think anyone could have done a better job than John Bunyan. And the way he wrote this Story is really good and entertaining. I would say that even non Christian’s will enjoy this Book. It was sometimes difficult to read as someone who’s first language isn’t English. So if your English is not the yellow from the egg( Germans will get it), then it will be quiet difficult. I highly recommend this Book to every Christian, and even non Christians. 5/5 Stars

Stimulating, must read for all.
This book is like looking into the mirror. It explicitly tells you the condition of your heart and the gift of grace God has offered only if you are willing to accept his grace. I highly recommend this book to all.
