Has anyone tried these on marshmallows?

I used mini marshmallows as eyes and colored the middle black successfully. The color stayed put and looked effective. I wouldn't recommend any intricate designs though!

Do these work on fruit, like apples?

YES rub the wax off of the apples for a good hold.

Do these include an expiration date? How long are they safe to use?

Food Writers are freshest if used within 24 months. There is a stamped manufacture date code on the product that is five digits - for example 17114, the first two numbers are the year (2017) and the last three are the Julian date (114th day of the year - April 24). If the items you have are out of their freshness range they are not harmful if consumed, but they may not perform as a fresh batch would.

I'm trying to use these to color the bottom of a Styrofoam cup, that will hold hot chocolate. Will the hot chocolate wash these away?

I'm sorry I do not know for sure but since excess washes off my fingers and the counter I'm guessing you might get a light stain but most would dissolve in the hit chocolate.
