When the toast is done, how much lift is available so that I don't have to burn my fingers or have to use a tool to pry it out?

Your toast would have to be very small to be a problem-- sort of zwieback short. The toast pops up very gently, presumably to avoid the flying toast issue that some have. And you can lift it up further with the same lever you use to start the toast toasting, so that the cradle that the toast sits on comes up to about two to two and a half inches from the top of the toaster. There is no need to ever use a tool to pry it out, and burned fingers will be a reflection on your patience in waiting for it to cool to your desired temperature. It's a slam-bang darn good toaster.
