Does is need a pre-amp - where does it get its power from?

The unit is self contained for power. The receiver has a built in rechargeable battery (li-ion with a usb charging cord) and the hand held unit needs two AA batteries. It does not need power from anywhere else. Make sure your receiver is fully charged before using session using a standard usb charger, then ensure you have AA batteries on hand in case the ones you have run down.

Can you use this with a Yamaha keyboard plugged into the aux port?

No. If you have to plug it into a phone, the plug is too big to fit the phone. Works with an amp.

Good quality microphone with a good price

Very good microphone ma sha Allah. The sound is so good and it has a long wire. It is made of metal not plastic. I ordered 2 of this microphone and still planning to add more 3 for my siblings for karaoke singing 🥰 Highly recommended.
