WITH ENGINE OFF READS BATTERY ACCURATELY. WITH ENGINE ON IT SHOWS BOTH BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR CONDITION.

It powers up off the battery being tested. No batteries needed.

Why didnt mine come with directions

I don't know why. But just connect to battery, read the voltage, go to the charts which tell % charge as a function of voltage-then you know status of the battery. I purchased a second one, put on long wires so I can see if my alternator is charging as I go down the road. Unbelievably accurate for the cheap price. Strong recommendation Jay

With my engine running I get voltage indicated and lights on the battery side of the unit. No lights on the alternator side. Is the unit defective?

I'm not a mechanic, but all I do is first I check the voltage of the battery without having started the vehicle. Next I start the engine and check the battery voltage while the engine is idling. While the engine is idling I usually show about 13.8 volts on the tester.
