Updated with color and gray scale illustrations, a companion website housing supplementary material, and new sections covering recent developments in antenna analysis and design This book introduces the fundamental principles of antenna theory and explains how to apply them to the analysis, design, and measurements of antennas. Due to the variety of methods of analysis and design, and the different antenna structures available, the applications covered in this book are made to some of the most basic and practical antenna configurations. Among these antenna configurations are linear dipoles; loops; arrays; broadband antennas; aperture antennas; horns; microstrip antennas; and reflector antennas. The text contains sufficient mathematical detail to enable undergraduate and beginning graduate students in electrical engineering and physics to follow the flow of analysis and design. Readers should have a basic knowledge of undergraduate electromagnetic theory, including Maxwell’s equations and the wave equation, introductory physics, and differential and integral calculus. Presents new sections on flexible and conformal bowtie, Vivaldi antenna, antenna miniaturization, antennas for mobile communications, dielectric resonator antennas, and scale modeling Provides color and gray scale figures and illustrations to better depict antenna radiation characteristics Includes access to a companion website housing MATLAB programs, Java-based applets and animations, Power Point notes, Java-based interactive questionnaires and a solutions manual for instructors Introduces over 100 additional end-of-chapter problems Antenna Theory: Analysis and Design, Fourth Edition is designed to meet the needs of senior undergraduate and beginning graduate level students in electrical engineering and physics, as well as practicing engineers and antenna designers. Constantine A. Balanis received his BSEE degree from the Virginia Tech in 1964, his MEE degree from the University of Virginia in 1966, his PhD in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1969, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2004. From 1964 to 1970, he was with the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA, and from 1970 to 1983, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering of West Virginia University. In 1983 he joined Arizona State University and is now Regents' Professor of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Balanis is also a life fellow of the IEEE. Review: A must-have in your electronics engineering library - superb reference! - WOW! I am still sifting through this book since just getting it, but it was very well packed by the seller, and new condition, as advertised. Has pretty much everything needed to design, and anayze various modern and older antenna systems. Chalked full of equations, exercises, and superbly colored diagrams and graphs. Recommended! Review: Extremely informative - As an antenna researcher this is a great pick up!! Would highly recommend for all students interested in the field as this is considered one of the gold standards of antenna design!

Very well written book that is scholarly and complete.
Prof Balanis is a master in Antenna Theory. I have read previous editions and was delighted with this book. The book is not for novices. A mastery of Maxwells equations is necessary to appreciate this book, fully. The Author develops the subject from fundamentals. Each chapter is very well organized and can be read, independently. Those who have read classical texts by Kraus as well as by Schelkunoff can appreciate the completeness of this book. I have been dealing with various Antennas for several decades starting with the Friis Antenna in the 60’s and later, patch and adaptive-antennae for medical devices. This book covers various architectures from the simple dipole to the newer antennae that can be found in smart phones and GPS systems This book is a valuable addition to the armamentarium of great text books in Antenna Theory.

Masterpiece of antenna theory
Balanis's antenna book is awesome! It covers topics in antenna theories comprehensively. The formulas are derived meticulously so that it's easy to follow. The fourth edition is colorful and is much more beautiful compared with previous black-and-white editions. The multimedia materials (Matlab code, ppt slides ,etc.) accompanying this textbook are carefully made and of high quality, providing additional ways that help readers understand antenna theories better. The only drawback is that Balanis relies on mathematic derivations heavily but lacks explanations that can make readers understand antenna intuitively. The shipment is very fast and the book is packaged very carefully so that no part is damaged in the long journey.

Just What I Wanted
Wow, I wanted a book that started at the beginning on design of antennas. That is what I got and then some. If you have the time and patience this textbook has the information and reference for you. I will get my moneys worth and much more. There are several topics covered, and several designs as well. There are some I had no Idea about and can't wait to build on my own. I am a Licensed Amateur Radio Operator KD9DYN, and I want to design and build my own antennas. So keep this in mind when deciding on your purchase. I waited 3-4 months before I decided on this book. I am very happy that I waited and did my research.

Content excellent, hardcopy poor
This book suffered the worst fate of them all! The copy I received was poorly glued because every tenth (or so) page had glue on the inside, which meant those pages were glued together! The content, however, is excellent as all of Balanis's work.

Mostly Harmless
Reading this book one gets the impression that it was more important for Balanis to have his name on a very thick book that it was to have his name on a very good book. At the very least it could use editing revisions to put figures and tables near the text which discusses them. At most, this book would make a great starting place for someone writing a better antenna book.

教科書として最適
アンテナについての知識がゼロからでも読み進められる。 Edition 4 まで改版が重ねられているだけのことはある。

La bibbia delle Antenne
Completo, scorrevole e rigoroso. Codici supplementari sul sito. Unica pecca: cambia molto poco rispetto alla terza edizione. Per il resto rimane un "must" per chi vuole studiare la disciplina delle antenne.
