Review: Graphic Designer's Timeline. - "Made by James" is a must-read for designers, creatives, and anyone interested in the design industry. James' honest and transparent approach makes the book relatable and engaging. The book is filled with practical advice, real-life examples, and beautiful visuals, making it a valuable resource for those looking to improve their design skills. Review: A Refreshingly Creative Lens from a Seasoned Designer - With eight years in the design worldโmostly focused on social media visualsโI have a finely tuned sense for creativity, storytelling, and visual rhythm. So when I picked up Made by James, I was curious but somewhat skeptical. Iโve seen a lot of designer-led books, but this one surprised me with its originality and depth. First Impressions What struck me immediately about Martinโs book was its beautifully unpretentious presentation. Rather than flashy visuals or glossy covers, it offers an inviting glimpse into the creative processโraw sketches, thoughtful annotations, and an openness thatโs both humbling and inspiring. It reads less like a textbook and more like an intimate creative diary. What I Learned That Felt Entirely New Empathy-Driven Concept Rituals: Martin doesnโt just sketch logos or identity packsโhe integrates empathy exercises, asking readers to first understand the human context before designing. As someone accustomed to KPI-driven social campaigns, this was an enlightening shift. Process Transparency as Teaching: Beyond showing final logos, Martin walks the reader through iterations, revisions, and even dead ends. That level of process transparency is rareโand it taught me that learning happens in the mess, not just the polish. Hand-Crafted Authenticity: In a world where so much design is sanitized for the digital scroll, Martinโs workโtactile, imperfect, deliberateโserved as a refreshing reminder that authenticity still packs power. Why It Resonated for My Social Media-Focused Practice In my day-to-day, quick turnaround designs, itโs easy to skip process in favor of finish. Martin reintroduced me to the power of taking oneโs time, asking โwhyโ before โwhat,โ and trusting that deeper roots yield more meaningful, enduring designs. Final Verdict If you're a designer emerging from the fast-paced realm of digital media, Made by James provides a vital counter-balance: a slow, sincere, study in thoughtful creativity. It doesnโt rely on trendsโit invests in foundational clarity, emotional resonance, and relentless exploration. Whether youโre refining brand identities, launching campaign visuals, or simply in need of a creative reset, this book is a gentle but powerful nudge toward depth and originality. Highly recommended.

It was so helpful to learn Jamesโs design process and discover that I was not alone when it comes to the challenges that designers face both creatively and from a business perspective. This is a must read book for graphic and brand designers, and there is much to learn from James, even if you think you have seen it all.

My favorite book of the year... maybe decade!
This book was so helpful, inspiring and beautiful that I read nearly the whole thing as soon as I opened it. Then I read it a second time and bought a 2nd copy for a friend within a couple of weeks. James is such a talented, successful and encouraging artist and he shares so much incredible wisdom about his process, how he got his start as a graphic designer, successes and failures, working with clients, dealing with rejection, and in general just how he has paved his way as a fulfilled and successful freelance graphic designer. The book is beautifully designed and printed. It feels so much more special (the weight, the layout, the print method...) than a typical book so it would make a great gift. Even if you're not much of a reader, this book as fun to thumb through, check out some rad designs, and digest some quick tips and short pieces of James' story. This guys is seriously the most honest, encouraging, positive, community-oriented and inspiring person... and also happens to be a ridiculous designer! We need more voices like his in the world.
