Does the closet have to be empty of clothes in order for the traps to work?

No u don’t have to move anything out your closets They fly right into the trap The traps have something g that attracts them n they get stuck Products works very well Resolved the issue I had and haven’t seen anymore moths since I recommend u can use them anywhere not only closets

will this work in a piano?

As long as you can identify the moth species as clothes moths, the trap should work. The clothes moth larvae tend to eat the felt inside the piano, and they like to lay their eggs below the keys. You might want to consider getting your piano professionally cleaned to prevent further damages.

is this made in china?

I only have the pantry moth traps here, but they are made in China, so I would assume the others are too. The bugMD traps are made in China too
