It seems to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones such as cortisol (the body's primary stress-fighting adrenal hormone), making these hormones more available to the body. It has a well-documented reputation for healing ulcers. It can lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion and acts as a mild laxative. It can also be used for irritation, inflammation and spasm in the digestive tract. Through its beneficial action on the liver, it increases bile flow and lowers cholesterol levels. Licorice also appears to enhance immunity by boosting levels of interferon, a key immune system chemical that fights off attacking viruses. Glycyrrhizinic acid also seems to stop the growth of many bacteria and of viruses such as influenza A. It has an aspirin-like action and is helpful in relieving fevers and soothing pain such as headaches. Possibly by its action on the adrenal glands, licorice has the ability to improve resistance to stress. Lessen symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. By enhancing cortisol activity, glycyrrhizin helps to increase energy, ease stress and reduce the symptoms of ailments sensitive to cortisol levels, such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromylagia. Combat hepatitis. Licorice both protects the liver and promotes healing in this vital organ. The herb's anti-inflammatory properties help calm hepatitis-associated liver inflammation. Licorice also fights the virus commonly responsible for hepatitis and supplies valuable antioxidant compounds that help maintain the overall health of the liver. Treat PMS and menstrual problems. The phytoestrogens in licorice have a mild estrogenic effect, making the herb potentially useful in easing certain symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome), such as irritability, bloating and breast tenderness. Although the glycyrrhizin in licorice actually inhibits the effect of the body's own estrogens, the mild estrogenic effect produced by licorice's phytoestrogens manages to override this inhibiting action. Prevent heart disease. Recent studies have found that by limiting the damage from LDL ("bad") cholesterol, licorice may discourage artery-clogging plaque formation and contribute to the healthy functioning of the heart. Research indicates that modest doses of licorice (100 mg a day) have this effect.

I am in recovery from an almost critical adrenal issue triggered by an emotional trauma. My cortisol dipped below normal for a couple of months and the onset of cramping and excessive thirst/dehydration scared me into a doctor's office. I've never experienced this in my life! I was peeing constantly, had to get up several times a night while extremely thirsty. Dehydration and the ensuing electrolyte imbalance showed up as uncontrolled cramping calves, toes, insteps and twitching thighs. I felt like my arms and legs had electricity surging through them. I could't sleep. What I learned from research is when your cortisol drops below normal and stays low your aldosterone may also tank, resulting in the body's inability to hold onto water. Aldosterone regulates the potassium, salt and calcium/mag in your body. An interesting symptom of low aldosterone - You leak salt. I recall a friends dog obsessively licking my legs months before the crisis. Another wrinkle - While your body has trouble upping your cortisol, adrenaline kicks in to keep you body going, hence ruined sleep and the surges I felt. For the folks who say they felt nothing, you're probably not in need of it. It's proven as an adrenal support. Also, losing weight involves more than just taking licorice. I used this licorice to help support my adrenals while they were rebuilding. For me I felt it's lift. Only used 1/4 dose - 14 drops along with TADS adrenal cortex and at least 75 oz of salted water for at least 2 months. The cramping immediately began to subside, but, I was still dehydrating. Eventually, all the symptoms slowly disappeared and went away. To retest I stopped all salt in water, and no licorice or adrenal support for 2 weeks. As part of my protocol this extract stopped my decline and ultimately helped normalize my adrenals! Some days after my test I tried the same dose of licorice for one day - The lift came back. It works.

If you have IBS dont take this. Trust me, it works for one thing, but harms another ,if you have GI issues like I do...the flavor is ok, managable, and it did help with constipation but then, it turned into severe cramping and much pain for days.. just a warning. I have nothing against this mixture ,just be cautious when taking it.
