Well if you don't have plugs in its just engine for you, so best to have with plugs in.

How long is the battery life?

That surprises me as I had a similar device I bought from Woolworths many years ago (forget what brand but nothing fancy, Lloytron maybe?). It ran off 1 x AAA battery and lasted absolutely ages. Perhaps if you use Alkaline batteries then you'd get better results. The cheap zinc batteries might be fine for your remote control but they are also more prone to leakage and. You'd think they would be fine to use in a low power device like this but the fact it requires 2 of the things rather than 1 like my old one did, maybe it's more power hungry than expected.
