couldnt you just put a water filter on the shower head?  does the same job for less money.

There are different terms for different tools in the fight against mineral-induced dull hair.

Most shower head filters will remove some hard minerals, but not all. The only really effective way to have soft water to shower in, is to install a water softening system that covers your entire home (which is pretty costly). Installing a shower head filter is definitely worthwhile though, and effective.

As far as washing out what's already in your hair, there are 2 types of products for 2 different issues:
1. Clarifying shampoos. These are intended to remove residue from shampoo, conditioners, and styling products, and should be part of your hair routine. However, they do *not* remove the minerals from hard water (which are totally different from hair care product chemicals and require a completely different process to remove).
2. Chelating shampoo, which is formulated to do exactly what most clarifying shampoos do not - pull out the hard water mineral deposits, which are just as bad for your hair/scalp as most hair care chemicals.

Women used to wash their hair with collected rainwater, which doesn't have the minerals and additives of tap or well water. It's another reason why we deal with hair issues our grandmothers & great-grandmothers did not; and why they're never struggling with dry, brassy, frizzy hair in those old photos. It's possible of course to buy gallons of purefied water to wash your hair with, but I simply don't have the patience. For me, a good subsitute has been:
A. Filtered showerhead (we're in an apartment so a whole-home system isn't possible yet);
B. Chelating shampoo treatment once per month;
C. Clarifying shampoo treatment every 2 weeks; and
D. All-natural, phosphate free shampoo with UV protective leave-in conditioner for all other washes.

Does this product remove chlorine from the hair after swimming? And, does it smell of coconut?

I have really hard water, and this shampoo seems to remove the chlorine from my hair. In my opinion it doesn't smell like coconut.... but it's a great shampoo!
