how often do filters have to be replaced?

I bought the Bissell Pet & Hand Vac in January and replaced the filters in July but I use it everyday because I have a long haired cat. I would highly recommend this Vac it is the best I have found in dealing with fur & litter. I also use it for small clean ups around the home instead of hauling out the big vacuum.

What are the dimensions of this filter?

The opening to fit the new filter in is 4 3/4. I measured early just ithe filter but it is 1 complete unit. Love this little vac.
