I bought this 7 years ago…
I bought this product in November of 2019. (Note: It is now February 2026 and I still stand by my review) I have enjoyed this product so much. It heats nicely, however, I didn't really buy it for heat, but have used it to supplement on some really cold days over the years. I would not recommend this product as a MAIN heat source as this or any other stove of this class, in my opinion, is not built in such a way to be anything other than a decorative and an occasional, supplemental, and attended heat source. I have had a real cast iron stove (vermont castings with the fire glass window) a wee bit bigger than this, and I missed just seeing the flame after I moved. The flame is nicely realistic. This runs LEDs for realistic flames display. I put it away in the summer in a closet and cover it to keep the dust off and remove the battery from the remote and place the remote inside on the logs when stored. I pull it out in October, put a battery into the remote and turn it on ( the LED fire lights) and it still is like new. I run lights mostly all fall and winter, until spring warmth during the waking hours. My dog actually likes to lay in front of it. All that is to say, I have never regretted this purchase. It warms the “feel and look” of any room it is placed in. It has been a great product these five years. I am of the opinion you get what you pay for with these stoves. (Also, an important feature I wanted was the vent to be on the TOP not the bottom, which five years ago when I bought my stove this was only one of maybe 2 or 3 models that offered the top vent in any brand). This product has the top vent, and it is vented on the ends as well. When the heat runs, the stove body does not get hot, but the air blowing from the vent is , so if you have toddlers, you would want to ensure the front vent heat blowing out doesn't blow into their eyes….I have used a screen when necessary with visitors with small children. Be sure to plug into the wall socket direct, not through a power/surge protector strip. The stove I have does not have a grounded plug so I do occasionally touch the cord at the back to check the cord heat if I run the heater portion for a while, which could be a little and barely warm, but not hot. BEFORE I bought this Duraflame stove product, I had purchased a much cheaper one. The vent was on the bottom of this cheaper stove, and when I did run the heat, which was not often, it delaminated a soft-lay laminate floor in front of the vent which was on the bottom front. When I noticed it, I didn't have my remote handy and just unplugged it, the cord and plug was very hot, so I cut the cord off even at the back of the stove and disposed of the unit. No more cheap stoves for me as this was an alarming experience, as well as a developing hazard and no matter the brand, I will always monitor the cord and the product for safety due to my own personal experience. All in all, This Duraflame stove, again has been a very, very nice product, and I have not had any problems with my unit and I am happy to give it a great review. Edit 2026: I came back to say 7 years and still going, and Im starting a new season. I run my lights most days all winter and after 7 years, my stove and its lights still run and looks great!

Phenomenal heater to invest in!
I have four of these now. I bought one in November 2019, one in December 2019, one in September 2021, and my fourth in January 2026. The first three I bought were black, and the new one I just got is cinnamon color. The one thing they all have in common? — They all still work, and heat very very well, as good as the day I bought them. The thermostat is very finicky with fluctuations. 74 may be way too hot, or leave the room cold. So I do have to adjust the thermostat frequently. The remote has a setting to switch the heating off (temp then reads 00), and then back on with another push. So you can run it a little high and just turn it to inactive if you get too hot. But I don’t even care. Because they heat exceedingly well even after over 6 years with the oldest. Other heaters we have owned from other brands in the past have all burned out and quit heating after a while, and they’ve had to be junked. Not these. I have slowly invested in the ones I have to heat the various areas of my house, and they are what I consider an investment. They are also very safe and operate well, so long as you plug them into their own dedicated outlet. Do not use an extension cord or plug them into any sort of splitter or otherwise unit that plugs into the outlet itself. Plug it directly into an outlet of its own and make sure nothing else shares the same breaker, to be safe. From what I read, they pull 1500W when heating. They’re costly at around $260 currently plus tax, but as I said, it’s an investment. They heat a fairly large area very comfortably and quickly. I kind of wish I’d invested in some colored options sooner, because the new cinnamon one I got is gorgeous! Love the richness of the color. Spend the money; you won’t regret it! It works well, the flame effect is very pretty, and they have no unpleasant smells or odors, unlike other heaters that can smell like plastic burning. BONUS: My cat loves sleeping on top of it. She has done so for years and has never been harmed by it. It’s warm on top but not unbearably so. So if your pets love it, do not be alarmed!

We love this fireplace! So glad we bought it.
We love this fireplace! Definitely 5 stars. Here are the things we considered when shopping and have been more than satisfied with. 1) Does the fire look realistic? Yes. We were especially concerned about buying online because it might look cheap. It looks great and real and totally satisfied us. The 3D effect helps. We applaud the clever design of the added beveled glass in the front, and the side panels are also glass, which adds to the realism. It is not hot to touch except the heat blower segment. 2) We also wanted to be sure we could turn the heat off so we could use during months when we don't want the heat. Yes. 3) Great heat output. 4) Sturdy not cheap. 5) Super easy to set up. This may have been the final deciding factor for us old folks. 6) Good lighting output of fire with choice of flame intensity. 7) And not noisy. Not too many reviews mentioned this factor. If it would have been noisy I would have returned it. I don't like a noisy fan blowing. It's nice and quiet. 8) Finally, I'll comment on the negative reviews about the control panel being inside the door. No big issue. We set the temperature, the flame preference, and timer and then leave it alone. We use the remote to turn it on and off. This negative review almost turned us away, but I'm so glad we decided to buy it. It is not an issue for us and probably not an issue for most people. 9) No smell. 10) The size is just right for our space. We were afraid it might be too small since its only 2 foot x 2 foot. We were comparing to the mantle type, which would have been heavy, take an hour or so to set up, etc. This size surprisingly seems perfect and we could easily move it if we wanted. We bought the black. I depend on reviews so decided to give details that I considered that I assume you will be too.

Great function and aesthetics, some noise
The fireplace is attractive and sturdy. The flame effect is very realistic and it puts out a good amount of heat with very little blower noise. It provides great supplemental heat, even in an open layout for our 1000 square foot first floor. When set at 76 degrees F it kept the temperature of our open layout living room very cozy all day with 5 degree outdoor temperatures. I love the ambiance it adds to my boring, traditional living room. The remote is acceptable once you've settled on settings that you prefer and only want to use the on/off feature. However, when settings need to be adjusted on the fireplace itself, it's challenging. The controls are hidden behind the door and blacked out. This is aesthetically pleasing, but makes it difficult to adjust, particularly in low light situations. The most significant downside for me is the whirring, mechanical hum that comes from the fireplace when the flickering flames are on. It seems to be related to a device rotating within the unit. It's very noticeable in a quiet setting, such as sitting down to read a book near the fire. If there's music or television on, it's not a problem.

Something to feel good about...
We are just SO pleased with this product! Purchased to fit into an 1840's Cape Cod-style home - it seems ideal. Set up and control options are quite straightforward, and simple to understand, even for the tech-averse. The flame effect is charming, amazingly realistic for the price point, and grand to have the effect without all the cleanup issues of a real fire. The bronze color blends nicely into the background of an existing fireplace for us, but would look equally well as a freestanding feature elsewhere. As a supplemental heat source, a good choice. Had I any idea such an inexpensive unit could look so good and function so well, we'd have purchased one years ago, and swept up less ash!

Great little space heater
I'm really pleased with this little space heater. The flame looks pretty real considering it's price, so it's very nice looking, which is a nice bonus. But the heat on it works great! Our furnace is having major issues, so this is what has been maintaining the temps. I have 1k sq ft on my main level, it's -17° right now as I type this, and it's maintaining a 64° temperature in our house. Very pleased with the quality and how it looks, especially for this price point. Would definitely recommend.

Died in less than 36 hours of use, 20 days of ownership.
Edit #2 - had it less than 20 days and the flame effect makes a terrible noise. It hasn't been moved since originally setting it up, and I've only used it 4-5 times, not even a total of 36 hours (and the flame effect is off all night, so it's run no more than 12 hours, tops). See video of the problem. According to owner manual, it's likely the flame effect drive motor. Total crap. EDIT! UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF REVIEW I had the DFI-550-0 model that I used daily for the previous 3 winters in the northeast, but my 10 month old border collie thought the power cord was a tasty treat. Thankfully it wasn't plugged in. I had just pulled it out in preparation for the upcoming cold front. I hadn't planned on a new one, but since I had the chance I wanted to find one that had better flame effect - the chewed one's was pretty lame. I also liked that the old one had the heat coming out just above the door, not near the floor. Thanks to some very helpful video reviews here, I felt this one would check those must-have boxes. That it came in bronze was bonus because I just redecorated the master bedroom and as it happened the new bed was antique bronze. As hoped for, the flame effect is as good as you could get without having an actual fire. Strangely, because of the mechanism & the placement of the lights & faux logs, they do have this neat 3D effect, it looks like flames licking the front, sides, and back of the firebox - and they are random, not just the same repetition of a blue & orange projection on the back wall as a small LED wheel spins. Like I said, it was lame. The heat output is good - quiet blower and as mentioned the vent is above the door not underneath. The thermostat goes from 62-82 and timer goes from 30min-9hrs, but you can also set to 00 which will just leave it on. You do have to cycle through to turn the temp or timer down/off. The bad news - the remote didn't work. Tried 3 sets of batteries, including the ones that came with it. It turned it on once but otherwise dead on arrival. I have contacted seller & I'm waiting on their next response after confirming for them that, yes, it is still dysfunctional after making sure I was using it from a distance of 6'. They mentioned they may be able to send me a new one after they receive from manufacturer. Better than sending the whole thing back. I'll update review with whatever resolution comes about. I will note that the remote, too, requires that you cycle through in order to turn the heat down/off. The remote from my chewed stove (which sadly did not work when I tried it on the new unit, which would have been a nice solution), did have up/down buttons. I specifically wanted a remote because I like sleeping in a fairly cold room, so set it to 62 at bedtime, then, using the remote, crank it up to 78 when the alarm goes off, and by the time snooze rings the room is toasty enough to venture out of bed. The other notable downside is the digital display is on the bottom right behind the door, so if your remote works & you want to use it, you have to know what the settings are in your head and keep track as you change the settings. That you have to cycle all the way through to turn down but can't see the display is poor design. The flames only have 5 levels so that's no big deal, but 70 to 66, then turn off in 2 hours would be aggravating to set with the remote. The chewed Duraflame displayed the settings up near the vent, and would blink out after a few seconds from changing settings, so not on all the time making sleep easier. The remote is very basic so you won't find the digital reading there either. Not a deal breaker, but I predict it will be pretty annoying as time goes by. I could leave the door open but that's just silly to have to do. I'll take the trade off because the flames are so good but if they come out with a new version next year, I'd probably buy it for the bedroom and just have this in the bathroom or living room. 2 stars deducted for the dysfunctional remote & poor design of the controls. I'll add a star back once I get new remote from seller, if that happens. Since videos from other buyers were so helpful to me, I've created one that shows the magic flame mechanism, which is pretty cool, and the cycle of the settings, which, again, are normally concealed by the closed door. UPDATE: I received the new remote and it's perfect! As mentioned before, the remote nor the stove itself has Up/Down control for temp and timer. As expected, you have to cycle all the way through if you want to lower flame effect or timer. Unexpectedly, the temp button on remote only switches from the previously set temp & full time on. So, to change from 72 to 68, you have to use buttons on the stove. For the morning ritual, I can keep it at 66 overnight, then just hit the temp button on remote & it will turn the heating element on, so just need to remember to switch it back to temp setting, otherwise it will run continuously, and get pretty warm. I'm happy with how seller handled the broken remote, they shipped the replacement quickly - added a star. Still annoying that this unit doesn't have Up/Down control, it is a bit more expensive than other models with remotes that do have it (including my older $100 unit with terrible flame effect.)

Warm, Quiet, and Beautifully Realistic
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 – Warm, Quiet, and Beautifully Realistic Product: Duraflame Freestanding Electric Fireplace Stove (Black) Model: Heater with 3D Flame Effect for up to 1,000 Sq. Ft. This Duraflame electric fireplace has quickly become one of my favorite home purchases. The 3D flame effect looks incredibly realistic and adds a warm, cozy atmosphere to any space. I love that the flame can be used with or without heat, so it’s perfect year-round. The heat output is excellent, easily warming my large living area. The heating unit runs quietly, so it’s never distracting. One small drawback is that the temperature adjustment can only be done directly on the heater, not from the remote. The remote also responds a bit slowly, but it still gets the job done for basic on/off and flame controls. Another big plus is that the top of the stove doesn’t get hot, which makes it safe around pets and children. Assembly was super simple—only the legs needed to be attached, and it was ready in minutes. ✅ Pros: Realistic 3D flame effect Quiet operation Top stays cool to the touch Flame can be used without heat Quick, easy leg assembly ⚠️ Cons: Heat temperature must be adjusted on the unit (not from the remote) Remote response is a little slow Verdict: This Duraflame freestanding fireplace stove delivers on both looks and performance. It’s quiet, safe, and creates a beautiful, relaxing glow. A great choice for anyone who wants a stylish and reliable way to add warmth and charm to their home.
