This great little device was incredibly simple to use - literally plug-n-play. I had an HP laptop fail to power up after 8 years [imagine-an antique] and luckily I had always backed up on a Seagate external drive...that was also many years old. I fell into the bad habit of using the Seagate to access old stuff from the new Acer laptop....until the Seagate crashed. Unrecoverable. I still had the old HP and had the idea that the hard drive could still be good since the failure was a power issue. SO...I invested in this adapter and plugged in the old hard drive that I removed from the HP carcass. BNGO - everything was still there: all the documents, photos and other files that I was certain were lost forever. Now that old drive is backed up on a higher end SanDisk drive and a cloud backup is pending. This device comes with it's own power supply and brief instructions - which are all you need. Not everyone will have the same good fortune that I did, but for the price this adapter / reader was an incredible value.

Got this to take the memory out of my 2001 eMachines Windows XP Computer and it got the job done. Just buy this, plug it to an outlet, connect it to the old hard drive and boom! Excellent product

First order of this item showed up used second replacement order showed up in the item appears to be okay but the box is all crushed on one side so hopefully it's all right.

Easy as pie! Nothing to install. Just plug it in and turn it on. Finished removing or saving data from six old hard drives I found in a box of waste. Reformated the drives. May keep them or drill them and dispose of them.

My friend has an ancient HP laptop with corrupted bios and an old 2.5" IDE drive. She wanted pictures from the old laptop but with the corrupted bios the machine would no longer boot, and she (both of us actually) thought the pics were long gone. Instead of spending time trying to re-flash an old BIOS, I saw this adapter and thought I would try to use it to copy the files off of the laptop's old IDE hard drive. In short, it was fantastic. I was able to read the old IDE drive and after scanning for viruses (there were lots of them) I found her pictures and managed to copy them to a large flash drive without breaking a sweat! Now I'm her digital hero! One important step, turn off indexing in the drive properties window as soon as it appears in Windows Explorer. Otherwise Windows will spend a lot of time indexing files on that disk and with unknown viruses the indexing process may increase the risk of infecting your own machine. This is something I do right away whenever I plug in an external hard drive. The Maker's user manual states that three disks may be used at once; a SATA and the two IDE pin configurations (2.5 and 3.5). I dug through my piles of old disks and tried it out, and indeed all three drives mounted and were assigned a free drive letter by Win10. I could work with them just as if they were mounted in the machine. So I spent a few hours going through those old drives and found files that I thought I had lost forever. The adapter worked flawlessly and even with three hard drives spinning, the wall wart that came with the adapter seemed to provide plenty of power. I had seen on another review or question that it would not work on USB 2.0 or 1.1. I tried it in a regular USB 2.0 port on one of my computers and it worked fine. So as I'm writing this, I'm using it to clone an old 3.5" SATA HD plugged into this adapter to a new SSD on another SATA to USB adapter that I had around. Working perfectly. This is a very handy tool for anyone who plays with their old piles of hardware or works on computers for other people. I love it.

Came quickly and was able to use easily (with no knowledge or experience.) Used it with many different brands and models and it worked for all of them.

I have used it with 3.5” IDE, 2.5” IDE and SATA, and it has worked very well.

Glad I got this, managed to get stuff off my old hard drives that have been lying around for a while, also rescued a lot of photographs for a friend of an old drive he had been keeping. Good bit of kit simple to use.
