Tiago Forte’s core frameworks—PARA and CODE—are genuinely excellent: clear, portable, and immediately useful, the kind of mental models that quietly upgrade how you think and work. The book itself, though, suffers from familiar business-book bloat, padded with meandering anecdotes and breathless name-dropping of high performers that strain credibility (Taylor Swift as a CODE case study is… a choice). Strip away the filler and you’re left with something lean and powerful: a practical system for turning chaos into clarity.

Look no further than Tiago Forte's book, Build a Second Brain. This book offers practical and effective advice that can have an immediate positive impact on your productivity and quality of life. However, while the book offers many useful tips, at times the content feels stretched and repetitive, which can make reading it a bit tedious. Additionally, while Forte provides a wealth of YouTube videos on how to choose an effective note-taking application for your needs, I would have liked to see him go more in-depth on this topic in the book. Despite these minor drawbacks, Build a Second Brain is a must-read if you're looking to improve your productivity. This book offers an innovative and useful approach to the subject, and is an excellent instruction manual for creating a customized and adaptable productivity system that you can revise and adjust over time. I found this book extremely interesting. Tiago lays out a concise plan for organizing the information in our lives and getting rid of the stuff that doesn’t matter. He’s not under any illusions that his exact system will work for everyone, but encourages people to try out the different aspects and us it as it makes sense to the individual. There are plenty of nuggets to take away from this book. If you’re overwhelmed by the amount of information you come in contact with on a daily basis, this book is worth picking up.

I think I'm good at capturing. But we are just hoarders if not being well-organized with the information we have accumulated over the years and will continue to encounter. First, this book taught me how to be a better organizer by being more goal-oriented and more intentional with my note-taking apps I already use, OneNote and Apple Notes. I started to explore Notion as well. I'm learning to use each app for specific items that aim to help me achieve my goals, manage my projects and even my daily life in a more systemic and productive way. I also started to use Instapaper for later reading. All these steps happened after reading Building a Second Brain. This book is a must-read for Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). A Second Brain is a must-have for knowledge workers in this information age. Secondly, this book reinforces my belief that it is never late to dream big. The essence of this book is CODE and PARA. CODE is a robust system to get you to take actions on capturing, organizing, distilling and expressing. PARA is a revolutionary system on on how you approach information and research to accomplish your goals. I believe both CODE and PARA are lifelong endeavors that will transform you and your world over time. PARA is a game changer. You have a goal of writing and publishing a book? PARA is right for you. You have a goal of receiving a PhD in a specific field? PARA is right for you. You have a goal of learning how to play a musical instrument? PARA is right for you. You have a goal of beautifying your home? PARA is right for you. You have a goal of becoming an excellent chef? PARA is right for you...The list can go on and on. This is because PARA helps you break your goals into actionable steps, one project after another, to help you reach your goals, big or small. If you want to improve your productivity and be more creative, this book is for you. If you don't think you are the creative type, you will know you are wrong after reading this book. Everyone has talent waiting to be discovered. Everyone has a voice that deserves the best self-expression. This book believes in you, in jumpstarting you to take actions. Finally, Tiago Forte is an embodiment of what he teaches. He uses his methodology to reach his goals. This book is an example of what one can achieve in following his system he eloquently shared with us. I strongly recommend you get the book today.

The short: Tiago Forte gives use a framework to tackle organization of our digital lives and to make technology finally work for us instead of becoming a burden. The good: Forte has three main concepts that help to organize your digital life and improve productivity (i.e. making the data you've capture) accessible and usable, instead of getting lost. Those three concepts are CODE, PARA, and Highlighting 2.0 (or Progressive Summarization). CODE: Capture, Organize, Distill, Express is a nice easy to remember acronym for the "second brain" and how we are to think of it. PARA: (Projects, Areas, Resource, Archive) is a subset of Organize and is how the "brain" is structured. Which changes the "normal" way we think of folder hierarchy in a very powerful way. Most of the things we do in our daily lives are Projects, but we save the data for a project in different "areas" and "resources" (i.e. unrelated folders) and aren't easy to find using browsing and thus create bloat that is never used and continues to grow, PARA is here to solve that. Lastly, Highlighting 2.0: is a powerful way to capture and distill the just of something you've read or written. So, that when you come back to it in 20 years you don't need to read it all over to understand why it was important in the first place (in less of course you wish to do so). The bad: About 50% of this book, probably more (particularly the first 100 pages or so), are portrayal, fluff, salesmanship, cheer-leading, and war stories mean to inspire the reader. Not only is this a huge waste of everyone's time, the author's system should inspire based upon it's own merits and because there was so much "extra", the book wasn't as practical and/or applicable as it could/should have been. This lack of applicability is evident in the fact that they author had to write a second book titled PARA to clarify and expound on the matter when he should have done so in this current book; and unfortunately, based upon what the author has said in this book, I doubt that his second book will truly clarify the matter. In fact, a review of "The PARA Method" by Dennis M says essentially that, "While it does expand on the method, you should be able to get everything you need from BASB". Additionally, Forte lays out a system that is more expansive than the scope of this book alone, leaving the reader to fend for themselves. Epilogue: This is a book that probably should have 5-stars, but tittered dangerously close to being 3-stars. The author has some good insights, he just doesn't execute the transfer of knowledge well in this book and thus the reader must fend for themselves to really implement what the author is trying to convey and will most likely take many reads/look-backs to fully grasp the fully utility of the message. My biggest gripe with this book, is that there's so much extra fluff and trying to sell you on the method and not enough instruction and application. Forte outlines the four methods to find data in his system, the first two being searching (which is easy enough), browsing (which Forte himself cite a study showing this is the preferred method by humans to sieve data) however due to the simplicity and flatness of his PARA system (as is) true browsing is seemingly impossible and it's not clear as how one should rectify this. Forte seems to suggest that we shouldn't worry about it, because not everything is going to be useful, but then why bother organizing at all if you can't find an item you need.

Not a lot of nuts and bolts. Depending on what you want to use this system for, this book will be more or less helpful. However, it's very inspiring and full of stories about creative people who organized their own external second brains. I wanted to find a digital way to organize a full language system in order to be a more helpful teacher, and some of this will be useful, but I wanted fewer inspirational pages and more nuts and bolts. I will figure it out, but apart from the wonderful information about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good (always important,) I didn't find any strong organizational skills here.

I found especially helpful the PARA method to organize all of my information in a systematic way so that I can actually use it. This was a really different way of organizing my email my folders my notes that I had never considered before and it really helps you to focus on action and how you’re using the information. I also really enjoyed the ideas of how do you integrate these habits on a regular basis. It’s a relief not to make sure you have a perfect system done all at once which is something I have always tried to do and it’s a bit too overwhelming and impossible to keep that way. Thiago gives you a method of slowly integrating this way of organizing the information in your life and by setting up weekly daily monthly routines that help you to review and organize eliminate and deal with this constant influx of information in a completely manageable way.
