No, they don't shed glitter or feel gritty.

How should I clean these brushes?

I used a bar of facial soap with tea tree oil in it to clean/disinfect them. I swirl it around on the soap bar and then rinse in warm water. Repeat until the water runs clear. Then I just let them lay out to dry. They are very sturdy and the brush bristles held up very nicely.

Do these brushes have lids? So you can cover the brush heads in your bag?

Mine didn't but I absolutely love these brushes. I just put mine in a zip lock when traveling.
