Does it work on Mosguitoes?

We are using the Dynatrap on our back deck (15ft x 15ft) and it works well there. No mosquitoes at all, but as soon as as you walk off the deck, unfortunately they are prevalent. So in short, Iwould say it works well in a small area, but certainly doesn't work in the large area that they say. It is also quiet and unobtrusive.

Question 2

Dynatrap reps - does this produce co2 if the bulb is removed ?  light is attracting moths at night -  i am after asian tiger mosquitos (daytime).

Accepted Answer

1. This unit relies on a UV photocatalytic reaction between its TiO2 coating and ambient organics/VOCs to generate CO2
2. A "carbon source" is not required per se; however, CO2 generation will depend on the amount of organics in the air. Ambient organics are assumed, which is a fair assumption but concentrations may be highly variable.
3. Since it reacts with ambient organics, the unit should theoretically generate more CO2 in polluted environments near natural gas or in urban areas more so than it will in less polluted environments, since pollution will lend plenty of VOCs as a source of CO2. Interesting enough, this also means that there should be a theoretical added benefit of improved air quality from the oxidation of VOCs. 
3. CO2 is more thermodynamically stable than CO but has a higher enthalpy of formation; however, the catalyst lowers the enthalpy of formation. The result should be favorable conditions for the creation of the more stable CO2 molecule.
4. The reaction is UV photocatalytic. Although a certain amount of heat is necessary and more heat increases the reaction rate of the oxidization process that is being catalyzed, the reaction itself relies on UV radiation - bulb warmth or rejected heat is of minimal significance.
5. The unit generates a certain amount of UV radiation in close proximity to the metal; thereby supplying an ample source of UV regardless of ambient conditions; however, ambient conditions may contribute additional UV radiation that may amplify the reaction (ex. sunlight UV).
6. Although sunlight should theoretically increase CO2 creation, the unit should still be plugged in to work (optimal lure and fan for capturing). Also, insect behavior may favor placement in dark shady areas over bright sunny areas regardless of amount of CO2 generation (since insects themselves may avoid hot and direct sunlight).

Question 3

Does it attract flies during daylight?  What lures them to the trap?

I have the DynaTrap 1/2 Acre Copper Insect and Mosquito Trap with 2 Replacement Bulbs. I have it placed 20 feet from our chicken coop operating 24 hours a day. We have flies a plenty. After two weeks the unit has captured no flies or mosquitos. The fan is not strong enough to pull in flies. I have seen them land next to the opening then fly away.

Does the trap make the loud zapping noise?
