desertcart.com Even the title of this terrific two-disc compilation--a play on the title of an early-'70s recording by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention--displays just how clever and hip this great L.A. band has always been. Just Another Band is everything an anthology should be, touching on all the best-known moments ("Don't Worry Baby," "Will the Wolf Survive?," "One Time One Night," "La Bamba," etc.), spanning their career from its origins through Kiko (six tracks from which are featured here), arguably their finest hour. Musically, you get hard R&B, Tex-Mex, pure traditional Mexican music, pop-rock, gorgeous ballads, and pure, raucous rock & roll. Actually, pure is the operative word here--and fans who already own all the albums proper will probably still want this for the soundtrack cuts, live versions (including a performance of their great "Let's Say Goodnight"), unreleased outtakes, cool live cover versions (from both Marvin Gaye and Cream!), and even their terrific "I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song)," originally performed by Louis Prima in The Jungle Book, from the late-1980s, Hal Wilner-produced Disney tribute, Stay Awake. How will the wolves survive? Damn well, from every indication on this fine collection. --Bill Holdship Review: America's Band - I am 60 years old. When I was five I got turned on to rock & roll by Elvis. Then came the Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Yardbirds, back to Muddy Waters, Little Walter, then Dylan, Van Morrison, Otis Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, The Band, John Hiatt, Dire Straits, U2, and....Los Lobos. To me Los Wolves are in the same strong roots tradition of The Band. This is music put out by men. Men who care about the music more than anything else. One of the things that set The Band (Levon Helm/Robby Robertson/Rick Danko/Garth Hudson/Richard Manuel) apart way back then was that they consciously set out to be the antithesis of rock stars. It was not a fashion show; it was only about the music. Likewise, Los Lobos. There are no gimmicks here, never have been. This retrospective two-disk set is endlessly diverse, entertaining, and challenging. It's chock-full of great songs from all of the band's LP's, up through Kiko, a truly stupdendous array of amazingly varied types of music. Of course, they have released many great albums since Kiko, so if this is your first Los Lobos purchase, you've made a wise choice. I like to put this on in my car, especially on longer drives, when I can listen to both disks. David Hidalgo is truly the "Garth Hudson" of the group: inventive, a musical genius, plus a fabulous singer. Like The Band, which eschewed flash guitar solos, you will find few instances of instrumental pyrotechnics here; however, when they do "step out", it's obvious that these gentlemen are master musicians. Los Lobos are, for me, the band which has been the most consistently great over the past thirty (!!) years. They are a national treasure. We are lucky to have seen them, to have been witness to their incredible talents. They have made the world a much better place simply by passing through it. Review: great cd - these guys are really top notch musicians but good luck finding this new.

Good stuff ...
I was not a big Los Lobos until I purchased this from Amazon. The price, description, and reviews convinced me to try it. An excellent retrospective from different eras of the band. Rock, pop, blues, traditional Mexican - this album has it all. If you are a fan, you probably have a lot of this material. If you are are a relative newbie, like me, this is a great place to start. The Los Lobos guitarists make appearances at the Eric Clapton Crossroads guitar festivals, and they are received tremendously by the audience and are among the best acts at both Festivals. Those are also worth a listen.

If You're Buying Your First Los Lobos CD
This is the one to buy. Two cd set starts off with more latin based music on the first disc and slowly turns more to rock & roll including a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" These guys are all excellent musicians who are greatly underappreciated by most of the people I know--"La Bamba" was both a blessing and a for them as far as I'm concerned. These guys play an eclectic blend of music and can play anything so well. See them live and you'll know what I'm talking about.

If you are from SOCAL, just go out and buy it if you don't own it. The rest of you may not quite understand
These guys are great musicians, and they know how to arrange their pieces. Being a bari sax player, it's nice to hear one, and done so sell. There is no one music that identifies Southern California, but thse guys play our Anthem with no need to apologize to its composer. The anthem of us all, trumping the Beach Boys, even? La Bamba, of course. Mas de cincuenta anos and still campeon

Yes this really is an excellent collection. The 2 disc album shows Los Lobos' great versatility: from Mexican traditionals to US country music. It's even better if you understand Spanish. The album collects a lot of highlights and shows they are much more than just a "La Bamba" fiesta band.
