Low-budget zombie horror. Cut off from the outside world at a remote filling station on a deserted country road, a young couple and an escaped convict become the victims of a voracious 'splinter' parasite that transforms its victims, human and animal alike, into the deadly hosts of an unknown disease. Review: "It's okay, we're cutting your arm off!" - This is a fun and original horror. It is full of gore, well scripted, has a magnificent cast, fantastic character development, awesome special effects and some spectacular gross-out moments! It takes a classic horror scenario (survivors holed up in a building - in this case a petrol station) but the concept of the parasitic monster brings flare to the genre. If you enjoy films like The Mist, The Thing and Night of the Living Dead, then you too will love this. Review: Not great but good - Ok what I didn't like was the overlong scenes, and as one reviewer said shoddy camera work which was all over the place. The plot was old hat, and I don't know why these films so often play out in a petrol garage or small supermarket - maybe because of the hidden angles, but frankly it's boring. The worst thing, and that's not just limited to horror films, is the way the film flicks between credits which is frustrating, I prefer it when they just get on with it., grrrr. What I did like was the monster - absolutely one of the best monsters I've seen in a horror movie. The idea was very good and the people concerned deserved to be mentioned in the credits as a separate team. I liked the hand and thought that was cleverly done and 'realisic. Some, not all, of the acting was very good and I think every actor in it was capable of a lot more. Especially wasted was the garage attendant at the beginning who I thought could have brought a lot to the film if he had been in it longer. Overall it was a very poorly edited movie but one that was saved by the actors and as I have said the exceptional monster. Just about worth 3 stars but definitely no more than that.

This splinters as sharp as a knife
Okay, this film might owe a small debt to John Carpenter's 1982 version of 'The Thing' but it has its own quirky identity, so it succeeds as a film in its own right, with enough originality and invention to keep it moving along nicely throughout its relatively short running time of 80 minutes. The plot is simple enough. A young couple on an anniversary camping trip, are taken hostage by another couple who are on the run, and desperately trying to reach the Mexican border. However when they stop off at a Gas Station, they all find themselves hostages to a flesh eating parasitic creature. One of the real joys of the film is watching the small group working out what makes the creature tick, and their increasingly inventive methods in combating its menace. I also liked the way they used their strengths to work as a team to try to survive the situation they found themselves in. The characters were well developed, and I genuinly cared about their fates. It was nice that they didnt just run round like headless chickens shouting 'We're all going to die!'. Finally, a special mention must go to the wonderful creature effects, nothing too showy or ridiculous, but brilliant all the same. So all in all, a very enjoyable little horror film, that uses its claustrophobic setting to great effect, and it really bodes very well for director Toby Wilkins' future efforts. 4 out of 5

A SWING AND A MISS FOR ME
A great horror concept, sadly executed very badly, use's frenetic jumps cut's a second as a substitute for good filmmaking. I am glad this trend of thousands of cuts a second, and shaky angles used to obscure any filmmaking craft seems to be slowly passing us as we roll into 2017, It's been over a decade of headaches as the style rose to popularity, where a film could not really claim to feature excitement or action without making you ask your self.. wait .. " what the hell just happened?" as you clutch your throbbing temples in agony. I did enjoy the last half an hour more. where the characters are trapped in a freezer and the editor has gone to the bathroom to presumably calm down or take his medication. I'd recommend Slither, or the Ruins for a better time and you will save on the cost of painkillers and possibly that CAT scan you will need in a few years time.

Silly
We trusted the 4 star reviews and were bitterly disappointed. A silly story line and bad acting. A lot of gore to compensate for the lack of plot and any other kind of quality. Are you any wiser at the end as to what kind of creature stalks humans and turn them into zombie cactuses? Nope.

A great, low budget horror film
A great, low budget horror film, not too terrifying (I'm a bit of a wuss), but tense and good fun.

I love this movie. I always watched it when it was showing on tv, which is why I bought this. If a low budget zombie thriller is what you're looking for, this is the movie for you.

Brutal, gory, well-paced and well-acted, this practical effects-driven monster movie was an absolute pleasure! Hoping to enjoy a romantic anniversary camping trip together, Polly (Jill Wagner; Blade: The Series, Teen Wolf) and her biologist boyfriend Seth (Paulo Costanzo; The Expanse) are carjacked by on-the-run criminals Dennis (Shea Whigham; Death Note) and Lacey (Rachel Kerbs). In transit a roadkill event causes a flat tire, and a curious splinter sets an interesting tone as they find themselves stranded at a remote gas station. If you’re gonna’ make a not-so-big budget one-set horror movie, a remote gas station strikes me as a good frugal choice. But how nice is it that gas stations are a classic harbinger check point in so many films? From Wrong Turn (2003) and Tucker and Dale versus Evil (2010) to The Cabin in the Woods (2012), the gas station is usually where victims have the opportunity to heed the harbinger’s warning and avoid the evils ahead. Yet here, it is upon arrival that they are doomed… because the harbinger was already a victim! Our monster is a botanical parasite that metastasizes in the blood stream to induce twitchy zombiism. The first victim is the gas station attendant (Charles Baker; The Neon Demon), who thrashes and contorts his mangled limbs, a marionetted host to the splinter monster. Early encounters with the monster are deliciously macabre as a freshly flattened roadkill slug-crawls towards an intended victim. We see the infectious splinters probe about like the prongs of a sea urchin. It’s REALLY cool. Infected zombie-like animated bodies flailing undexterous limbs, and disembodied hands twitch like something out of Bride of Re-Animator (1989). Everything looks great and, given the premise, the delivery is shockingly credible. Despite the often choppy editing—most likely to disguise any flaws in the practical monster suit—this remained goretastically effective, engaging and exciting. These special effects are nothing to scoff at… actually, I was quite impressed. The blood work is excellent—and the blood splattering is kinda’ chunky! The animated bodies are disturbing, the stop-motion severed hands are a joy, and the brutal limb breaks will catch you off-guard. When we see the “final monster” it’s only for a second at a time; we see it often, but only in these glimpses. It’s a macabre amalgam of randomly attached bodies/parts similar to the new The Thing (2011), the end of Terrified (2017),the final queen roach monster in The Nest (1988) or Zygote (2017). When films put all their eggs in the monster basket, we tend not to expect much overall. Perhaps a few obscure creature sightings and a gory death scene in the first hour, followed by a hopefully redeeming monster-rich finale—all surrounded by weak writing and acting. Director Toby Wilkins (The Grudge 3) delivers a very respectable film. His characters are well-written and performed affably yet credibly. I don’t think I have a single negative criticism of this film! I just… loved it!
