Gustave Doré's Romantic style of illustration, supremely imaginative and richly detailed, was ideally suited to literary subjects. His wood-engraved illustrations for John Milton's monumental epic poem Paradise Lost, recounting mankind's fall from the grace of God through the work of Satan, were among his finest and most dramatic works. This volume presents superb reproductions of all 50 plates drawn by Doré and engraved in his studios for the original edition of Paradise Lost. Artists and art lovers will find in these pages supreme examples of the illustrator's art. Among the events depicted: the expulsion of Satan from heaven, Adam and Eve in Paradise, the nine-day fall of Lucifer's legions to Hell, the Creation, the temptation of Eve, the Flood, Moses holding up the Ten Commandments, and the fearsome creatures Milton referred to as "Gorgons, and Hydras, and Chimeras dire." The dreamlike, otherworldly quality Doré often brought to his work seems especially appropriate for Paradise Lost with its lofty spirit and epic events. Indeed, Doré's grand conception seems to realize perfectly Milton's own poetic version. Appropriate quotes from the text of Paradise Lost are printed alongside each illustration. Great Art Book
Fantastic print quality and large so you can really see the details in Dore's work. Good collection of works too. Happy to add this to my art book collection.

Quality Book with Great Illustration
Very beautiful illustrations. I have purchased Dore's Divine Comedy illustrations and was interested in this one as well. Anyone with an admiration for this type of work would enjoy owning this book for the price. An honest and unpaid review, -shaolin

Dore's Illustration's for ''Paradise Lost''
I absolutley appreciate the gifts and the ability to illustrate and these prints are magnificant. I don't have the words to use to describe these works of art. If a student of art is looking for great art then I recommend this as reference and to add to ones owen collection.

Gorgeous reproductions of Dore's work. Such beautiful renderings that really transport you. I made some high quality copies to frame and hang on my walls to get even more enjoyment out of them. Highly recommended.

A Happy Accident
Mistakenly bought this. I was looking for a copy of Paradise Lost WITH illustrations, and purchased this without reading the description carefully. (Lesson learned) I was upset for a bit till I opened the book and fell in love with the art. Very beautiful works of storytelling. And there is a summary of each book of Paradise Lost inside so it kind of worked out.

Llego en tiempo y cuidado. El libro es de buen tamaño y cada página viene con una ilustración del tamaño del libro con un texto al pie con el título de la ilustración. Son hermosas. Fueron un regalo, pero definitivamente quiero uno para mí.

This book collects and presents the artwork by Gustave Dore that he undertook in relation to the illustrated edition of Milton's "Paradise Lost" in the 1860's. Milton's poem tells the story of the war in Heaven, the fall of Lucifer, and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Dore illustrates the key moments of the story in a fantastic manner. Dore created 50 wood engravings, which have been beautifully reproduced here. The sense of loss, and the emotion expressed in Milton's poem, is wonderfully captured by Dore. His artwork is stunning, and hugely influential. If you enjoy this book, I also recommend both The Dore Bible Illustrations (Dover Fine Art, History of Art) and The Doré Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy .
