Roughneck ROU65510 Twister Wood Splitting Wedge 2.3kg (5lb)

Great wedge that twists as it goes in so works better than conventional wedge or grenade / bomb type wedge on large knotty logs. Needs a 4lb hammer really to drive it in to difficult logs though which gets tiring after a while.

Splits large rounds well. Pretty clever the twist in the metal. ONLY DOWNSIDE IS THE CHISEL STYLE edge which can be difficult to "start" the cut. Probably best to use in conjunction with a standard "bomb" type splitter

After reading the reviews I wasn’t sure about buying this item. But I’m so glad I did, it’s excellent. Does take a bit of getting used to and I found that starting it with a club hammer to get it positioned correctly was the best way, then getting the sledge hammer. I was splitting some damp 600mm diameter logs about 300mm thick and did them so much easier and a lot less effort than with an axe.

By itself it is hard to imagine how you could possibly split a log with it as the wide albeit sharp chisel end doesn’t penetrate sufficiently using a club hammer to allow heftier whacks with a sledge. However It came in very useful to rescue the excellent Roughneck wood grenade (reviewed separately) that would occasionally but not often get stuck in the end of knotted lumber otherwise best avoided and chainsawed up instead. In fairness it is an impressive lump of heavy metal with a twisted body that will force open an existing crack in the most dense timber but it has to have an opening to start with. However you are probably better of buying 2 Roughneck wood grenades and work them in tandem and for occasional rescue.

Works very well indeed - even on knotty Scots pine. Also is excellent value for money. Ordered a second one to tackle the really big beasts

Great piece of kit I have been splitting wood for many years and always used an axe when splitting larger rings, these wedges made the job so much quicker (purchased 2).
