NOTE: The website (www.guidetojapanese.org) has the SAME content for free. This book is for those who prefer to have a physical copy. My guide to Japanese grammar has been helping people learn Japanese as it's really spoken in Japan for many years. If you find yourself frustrated that you can't understand Japanese movies or books despite having taken Japanese classes, then this book is for you. It will help you finally understand those pesky particles and break down grammatical concepts that will allow you to comprehend anything from simple to very complex sentences. You will also learn Japanese that's spoken by real people including casual speech patterns and slang, stuff that's often left out in most textbooks. Don't take my word for it, just check out my website and order this book to have it handy wherever you go.

One of the best Japanese grammar guides out there
I've been referring back to Tae Kim's website for more than 15 years so I finally decided to buy the book. Don't be fooled by the ugly cover, this is one of the best Japanese grammar guides out there. It will take you from the absolute basics to more advanced grammar, building up step by step. The explanations are all very clear and help to make sense of why things work the way they do. I only wish the design and print quality was a bit better.

concise explanations
i picked this up closer to when I started learning Japanese and it's explanations of the grammar were very understandable, also gives you example sentences so you know how to use them, supplementary vocabulary also.

Highly Recommended
Very well-written and easy to use. Also incorporates kanji and vocabulary into each module which is excellent. This book is a must-have!

Great for Beginners
Good quality in terms of content and print, slight gripe in that there are printed hyperlinks which I thought to be an odd formatting choice. Perhaps a condense of the contents of the aforementioned hyperlinks would’ve been a better choice? Aside from that, it’s incredibly well written and easy to understand.

A revolutionary new way to learn Japanese.
This book teaches you Japanese by - well - teaching you Japanese! Not by teaching you in the "normal" way of grammar and vocabulary so you can translate English into Japanese, but by explaining how Japanese works, and how sentences are constructed. The possibly frightening thing for beginners is that the writing system is introduced and used in full - Hiragana (for Japanese words), Katakana (for words of foreign origin) and Kanji (the characters of Chinese origin which explain the meaning and origin of all vocabulary) too, right from the beginning. As someone who learnt Japanese from a combination of books, university (UK) and immersion in the language, and has never properly got on top of Kanji, this book is a wonderful tool to make life easier for anyone wanting to really know and understand Japanese.Thoroughly recommended!Noel Howlett(Currently teaching Beginners Japanese with U3A)

Better than expected!
Reading some of the reviews on this book, I was worried that it would end up being a cheap & nasty book. But instead, even though this book is based on the author's website, this book is laid out nicely to suit a printed book, instead of just being a screenprint/dump of the website.Further, the contents are useful & cover a lot of ground, so if you're a beginner/intermediate Japanese speaker like me, I strongly recommend this book. Its approach to teach you proper Japanese is interesting and logical, and I feel that its use of hiragana & katakana & kanji from the beginning is a very good way to get a person used to the trickier parts of the language right away.

as expected from tae kim... AWSOME
a MUST HAVE for japanese learners, nothing else compares to it, honestly. tae kims not afraid to say the difficult stuff, and make japanese a bit more diffucult so that you get a better understanding of it in the long run. just remember the website resource is exacly the same thing if your a bit short for cash.

Well explained
Very well made. It's got all you need to tackle this language right from the beginning.

Solid Book
Great guide, extensive. I wouldn't recommend to a new learner until you have cemented a solid foundational understanding as it skims over the basic grammar.

Not A Guide, But Grammar Bible
If you're learning Japanese, this is a mist-have book for you. It has almost every grammar rule. Every rule has example sentences so that you can understand with the context. While some are difficult to understand, it generally is very very useful.
