About the item

  • About this item About this cultivar: Epimedium x rubrum is a deciduous, rhizomatous perennial to 1 foot in height, with attractive, red-tinted young foliage which colours also in autumn. Flowers are crimson, with creamy-yellow spurs. A garden classic it has the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Image Credit: Wikipedia Creative Commons About this genus: Epimedium has many common names such as barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, horny goat weed, rowdy lamb , randy beef grass or yin yang huo (Chinese of course). No prizes then for guessing its traditional medicinal uses! A member of the barberry family, the genus was given its Botanical name by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, derived from a Greek word for a different , epimedion. The vast bulk of Epimedium species are deciduous or evergreen hardy perennials. Easy-to-grow - they will grow anywhere that isn't a pond. Despite being best known as a full shade many will also grow in full sun ( see the photo of the cultivars we have in pots!). Epimedium welcome spring with delicate airy flowers. Following which a solid backdrop of attractive foliage appears and remains for the rest of the season. In the garden Epimedium will rarely make the casual observer stop and stare but these shade lovers are essential in many gardens. Epimedium are most often used either as woodland garden specimens or ground cover for small shady areas - but don't let that stop you using them in all sorts of places, even rock gardens. We find they make great impact as ground cover - full shade or full sun! Position: Full shade, partial shade, full shade Soil: Almost any soil Flowers: March, April, May Other features: Great Ground Cover, Dappled Shade or Full Shade Loving, Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM), Interesting Foliage or Fruit Hardiness: Fully hardy - grows well in Ballyrobert! Habit: Clump forming Foliage: Semi evergreen Height: 15 - 25 cm (0.5 - 0.75 ft) Spread: 45 - 75 cm (1.5 - 2.5 ft) Time to full growth: 2 to 5 years type: aceous Perennial.
s are sold in half litre sized pots (9cm pots that are nearly pint sized, about 520ml in capacity). All the cultivars we sell have been grown and tested in our own garden (which is an RHS partner garden open to the public). When your s arrive they can usually be ed straight out after soaking in water for 3 or 4 minutes. A good rule of thumb; make the soil level of the pot level with the rest of your border when ing out. Another rule of thumb; nearly all our s will grow in indirect sunlight; we are in the British Isles after all. Another rule of thumb (!); s usually do better in the ground, which is unsurprising because that where they can from! Containers are ok if s are kept fed and watered during their growing months, and in a warmer place during the winter. Try not to over water! During the year s can be in various states of growth. The same delivered in early spring could be much bigger or smaller if delivered in late spring. Please be aware of this when ordering or receiving them. Some s may have their flowers and foliage cut back when we send them, and look a bit awful! Don't worry, it is for their own good; some s like to travel light. Similarly bulbs, rhizomes, and some s may be dormant or dying back for the year when you order them, they may even look dead - that is the nature of hardy perennials so don't worry. them out and wait, perhaps until next year, patience is a virtue in the hardy perennial game. Eventually your hardy perennials should grow back beautiful year after year. Again, this is the nature of hardy perennials - they die back and grow back, die back and grow back, year after year after year. Some years are better than others. You get the picture! Postage and packaging is a flat fee of £3.99 per order If you are for some reason upset in any way please contact us - we're human.
