G9 lamp holders are designed for G9 lamps. All types of G9 lamps (including G9 LED lamps) run off mains voltage (230 volts). Therefore, if you are using the lamp holders with G9 lamps you do not need a transformer. As you suggest, if you are connecting the lamp holders to a UK power socket, the plug should be fitted with a 3 amp fuse.

My lights have no earth cables (1960s v common) does this work the same way as plastic lamp holders that no earth connection needed eg class 2 safe

Hello, the normal installation is that the luminaire needs a grounding wire, but your luminaire is a Class 2 luminaire, does not require a grounding wire, G9 ceramic lampholder, does not require a grounding wire, and the ceramic insulation is also very good.
