Nice files.
They're great. Work nice, feel nice in the hands, good size and they seem sturdy. They work for a beginner like me for sure.

Good for the price
These work well for the price and have a place in a woodworker's tool collection, but they are certainly not comparable to high quality hand-stitched rasps costing many times as much. They do what they are supposed to do fairly well, and their pointed, tapered profile allows them to work in areas where some other rasps may not. If choosing between these and a Shinto rasp, I would choose the Shinto, but they're cheap enough to buy both kinds, and they each have strengths and weaknesses. The surfaces these leave will require extensive filing and sanding to smooth them, and they work much slower than the premium rasps. The real question is whether you want to pay a lot more for better quality and performance or whether these are good enough for your needs -- the same question you have to ask about any tool, unless money is not a factor.

Teeth worn down, loose handle
At first I was blown away with how much material these rasps can remove with each stroke. The teeth were so sharp I had to get a new set of gloves because they shredded the finger tips of my cheap pair. Unfortunately, after a reasonable amount of use, I've seen a lot of dulled teeth in the middle of the rasp forcing me to use the parts of the rasp that were still sharp.

Awesome tool for the price!
For the price these are a solid 5 stars. If they were 50 bucks each, Id still give them at least 3 or 4 stars! I carve wood for a living, and rasps are my most used hand tools. I have a wall full of them of all different kinds from cheap to hand stitched French ones. So how do they cut? Not bad at all, especially for the price! The teeth are very consistant. None of those couple teeth just a bit higher than the rest. If you are familiar with the Dragon rasps, they are pretty much exactly the same as their coarse ones. They are also the same shape. The 8 "one is pretty much identical to the small Dragon rasp in size and shape. To compare to the fabled Nicholson 49 &50 they are wider, thinner, pointier, bit stiffer. They are as about aggressive as the older USA made 50 and leave a little nicer of a finish. If a storage case is important, the ones they come with are OK. I doubt Ill ever use them though. I would definately call them a second cut, meaning if you are planning on hogging off a lot of material, its gonna take a while using just this, so get yourself one of those $12 Nicholsons with the big ugly teeth to start with, and finish with these guys. You'll be ready for 120 sanding in hardwoods. There are a few things that would cause me to knock off a star if they were more expensive, but for the price I accept it. The handles are rubbery type plastic. I like a smoother wooden handle, and one day when I have nothing better to do, I'll probably make wooden ones. On the plus side they are on there solid and strait. They clog a bit. I've used them on hard maple, cherry, and walnut for a couple hours and tried them on white pine bit just a little. Keep a good stiff nylon brush handy and a couple swipes now and then and you'll be back in business. I have noticed that the clogging is diminishing a bit the more I use them. While these will will not replace anything for me, they have their place. They are great if you teach or do demonstrations where something can easily get lost, broken, or stolen. I Got them for my daughters and step sons so they dont have to wait for someone to get done with a rasp for them to use it and I dont worry about them dropping mine. Knowing what I know about these, I would not hesitate to buy them again! I am attaching a couple photos for comparison to other rasps in size and tooth pattern. Left to right with rasps pointing towards you Nicholson "Woodcraft", Nicholson 49, The 8" rasp being reviewed, Dragon rasp coarse, Auriou #10 grain, Dragon rasp fine, bastard file.

Effective, precise, sharp, well made
Buy these if you want to shape wood easily and precisely. They cut easily as I cleaned up the corner curves on a 1-inch oak board I sawed to replace a cutting board for my RV kitchen sink. Well made. Should last more than a lifetime like the tools of yore.

I'd buy them again - if and when they ware out
I like these files. They are actually quite sharp and cut into hardwoods very well but don't rip of the grain.

Excellent value
I normally donโt buy files that cost less than $30 because they just donโt last (normally I use them for metalwork) but I needed something to help shape contours on a cane head and figured what the heck. The function of these rasps are just about perfect and they remove material much faster than youโd expect. How long will they last? Iโve only used mine a bit but I would expect that they wonโt stay sharp as long as a $40 Swiss made rasp... but who cares? These are $7 a piece. Thatโs half the price youโll pay for a rasp at a hardware store that will hardly work at all, and the bonus is that once itโs dull you can anneal it and make something with the steel. Itโs a very convenient size and shape.

They are fine.
They will do the job, but leave bad tooling marks. Better to spend the extra money on a hand stitched rasp.
