This book gives students an answer to the question, โWhat does my professor want from this essay?โ In lively, direct language, it explains the process of creating โa clearly-written argument, based on evidence, about the meaning, power, or structure of a literary work.โ Using a single poem by William Carlos Williams as the basis for the process of writing a paper about a piece of literature, it walks students through the processes of reading, brainstorming, researching secondary sources, gathering evidence, and composing and editing the paper. Writing Essays About Literature is designed to strengthen argumentation skills and deepen understanding of the relationships between the reader, the author, the text, and critical interpretations. Its lessons about clarity, precision, and the importance of providing evidence will have wide relevance for student writers. Review: Great condition, timely arrival - Great condition and came in a really timely manner. Was required to buy this for an English lit class, but have come away really loving the book. The author's writing style is easy to read and she makes some great points about building essays. Kind of which Acheson gave more thesis examples though.... she only demonstrates one essay building process on a poem. Review: Great service - Quick shipping and was exactly the book I was looking for

Must Read For All English Majors
Writing literary arguments is difficult. Like weird difficult. Some English majors read a text and snap, they see which what where their evidence for a good argument is and how to use it to construct a really good literary argument: curse you native speakers with liberal backgrounds which always affirmed your convictions about everything. Then there are English majors like myself: colored, lower-lower class, student at a public American university that does not have a serious competitive English program (Why am I there?), but have dedicated professors (them's my reason), and is the type that still has trouble constructing an argument (I've written dozens of A+ paper where I get it, but I still don't get it). Professor Acheson's book was a tremendous lifesaver for me. I found her book tucked tight in the "Books on Writing" shelf at The Strand in New York City. It's a slim handsome little book that is not going to lecture you about how to read or what to read or explain theories. This book is a manual for English majors. You will find step by step advice on how to get from reading and annotating your text to polishing it off before submitting it in to your professor. Seriously, Professor Acheson, I want to learn more about writing essays about literature: PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER ONE, maybe focused more on short stories/novels than poems.

came fast and clean. no damage This could possibly be a good book if it was specifically for someone who has never written an essay about literature. Or even for someone who is not an English Major who doesn't know how to begin an essay for their required English course. Otherwise, it's written in a way that's extremely condescending to anyone who has before written an essay in a different way and liked their result. It's one thing to have a way which you like and would like to share, but she basically just tells you that if you write an essay any other way, your process is wrong and that your teachers will only be impressed if you write it this way. Unimpressed. (less)
