The machine is mostly plastic, including the water tank.  The metal finish is cosmetic; it's actually a plastic body.  Metal components include the group head, the portafilter, presumably the boiler, and some of the accent pieces like the cup warmer and the drip tray cover.  Also, the machine uses a pressurized portafilter.   I would recommend the Phillips Saeco Vienna plus superautomatic over this machine, at a price difference of ~$100.  After spending weeks tinkering with grind settings, brew length, and even changing to a non-pressurized portafilter, I finally switched machines and my espresso started turning out a lot better, and the Saeco does all the work for you.
