smooth Irish whiskey
I recently had the pleasure of trying Writer's Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey, and I'm genuinely delighted to give it a full 5-star rating. It's a whiskey I would highly recommend. From the first pour, this whiskey offers a really inviting experience. The aroma is quite captivating, with gentle notes that hint at its smoothness. On the palate, it's incredibly approachable and well-balanced. I found it to be wonderfully smooth, without any harshness, allowing the subtle complexities of its character to come through. There's a pleasant sweetness, perhaps a touch of honey or fruit, intertwined with a warmth that's comforting rather than overpowering. The finish is equally enjoyable – clean, lingering, and exceptionally smooth, leaving a really pleasant impression. It's a whiskey that encourages you to savor each sip. What makes Writer's Tears particularly stand out is its overall drinkability and refinement. It feels like a whiskey crafted with care, perfect for unwinding after a long day or sharing with good company. It's truly a testament to the quality of Irish whiskey. In summary, for anyone seeking a remarkably smooth, flavorful, and thoroughly enjoyable Irish whiskey, Writer's Tears Copper Pot is an excellent choice.

Easily my favourite Whiskey ever
I saw this on a Saturday morning cooking show, liked the idea of it and bought a bottle. I wasn't disappointed! A few months down the line and I like to know I have a couple of bottles in the house, just in case! The presentation box is great, ideal if you want to gift it. Your 'giftee' will think you are an expert! The taste is subtle, vanillery and sublime. It has a great colour and comes in a nice bottle with a story to tell. I judge a Whiskey by if I can drink it neat or at worst, over ice. This is an easy drink to enjoy. Its clearly made with love, it is as close to perfection as I think a whiskey can get. Buy a bottle, (its currently on offer in Waitrose) you will not regret this.

Very good, but flawed
I compare all Irish whiskeys to my personal favourite, the legendary Redbreast 12. This isn't too far from it: there is the same treacley sweetness, a bit more spice than nuts, a somewhat heavier touch of dark fruits on the palate, the addition of candied orange zest notes, but essentially they're broadly similar. The issue arises from the spirits that comprise Writers Tears spending a bit less time in the barrel than the 12 years that Redbreast spends ageing. Consequently, the nose is a bit rougher, and there's a growing bitterness that sits more prominently on the palate with each sip. The first dram goes down very well here, but after the second, I did not want another. With Redbreast, the 'aah go on then' wins out until I notice a disturbing lowering in the level of the bottle and my inhibitions. I bought this on offer for a smidgen over £31 and at that price, I can think of a few delicious Islay malts (Laphroaig, Talisker) that kick this into touch. If you're dead-set on Irish then Jameson Black Barrel - when on offer for £25-28 - represents far better value with its trademark caramelised smoothness and exciting smokey finish; if you're patient you can cop Redbreast 12 for ~£37, and it really is worth the extra few quid. Still a good whiskey though, just flawed and a touch overpriced. 3.5 stars would be more appropriate here, but I'll round it up.
