Great value
I bought this when I started making food for my dogs. I was using rice, but it adds weight from the carbs. Barley is an excellent filler with fiber instead of carbohydrates. This still keeps my ground turkey, barley, sweet potato and carrot stew affordable. I can throw it all in a pot to boil and have a great topper and/or meal in just 45 minutes. I don't soak it overnight, and I only boil it for 40-45 minutes. I made a fresh batch for my self using the soak and boil for 1-1/2 hours method but I didn't really notice much difference from what I made for them in the shorter time.

An all-around delicious barley, provided you can deal with the hulls
I originally got this for cholent but branched out into soups, stews, pasta sauces, and plain or lightly salted barley boiled and served with butter and maple syrup for breakfast. It is delicious, the soaking time recommendation is arguably conservative (Iโve soaked as little as overnight, roughly 10-12 hours and not regretted it, though cooking time was noticeably longer) but that will depend on how chewy you find acceptable and how much additional cooking time you can give it. The hulls donโt break down noticeably and are too robust to chew through, but theyโre small enough to chew and swallow alongside the restโIโd compare it to fragments of kernel coating in popcorn, though softer but more prevalent. Some people (like me) wonโt have a problem with them, some people may be bothered but can overlook them, and some people will probably find them intolerable. In this respect I think itโs just โmatter of tasteโ like unsweetened black coffee, extremely dark chocolate, or anchoviesโthis may or may not be for you, but it isnโt for โproduct qualityโ reasons, the product isnโt for everyone and it doesnโt have to be. If youโre adventurous about texture, give it a try. If youโre less adventurous but know someone who is, give it a try and foist it off on the more adventurous people if you donโt like it. The one other caveat is that like (but to a lesser extent than) dried fruit or beans, this can be a lot more dietary fiber than the typical western-diet digestive tract is used to. Itโs good for you, but maybe start with small servings as a side dish rather than jumping right into three big hearty bowls of the stuff, work your way up. Sudden intake spikes wonโt make you as miserable as the more fermentable prunes/dried apricots/beans, but itโs still better to adjust gradually. People shopping for hull-on barley probably already know this, but itโs worth mentioning again.
