Roger Moore (Live and Let Die, Street People) and Susannah York (The Killing of Sister George) star in this explosive 1974 international conspiracy thriller, set in the South African goldfields and directed by Peter Hunt (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Death Hunt). A ruthless global cabal of financial investors plans to manipulate the price of gold on the world market – by sabotaging one of South Africa’s top gold mines and flooding it with millions of gallons of water. All they need is someone to take the blame. Manager Rod Slater (Moore) seems the perfect choice. He’s brash, rough and impulsive – just the sort of man to make a fatal mistake. As Slater embarks on an affair with Terry (York), the heiress granddaughter of mine owner Hurry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland, Panic in Year Zero!), the conspiracy tightens all around him and thousands of lives hang by a thread... Based on a best-selling novel by Wilbur Smith (Dark of the Sun, Shout at the Devil) and filmed entirely on location in South Africa, Gold is an unforgettable thriller with a breathtaking climax and a fantastic cast which also includes John Gielgud (The Whistle Blower) and Bradford Dillman (Compulsion).Special Features:-Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger and Nathaniel Thompson -Theatrical Trailer Review: Gold with our favorite Bond... Roger Moore! - Recently, we read Roger Moore's book "My Word is my Bond" and thanks to this excellent biography of all the work accomplished by Roger Moore, we became familiar with movies we had never seen by our favorite... Bond, James Bond. So, we are trying to see all his films. In Gold, Roger Moore stars with Susannah York in this movie about the dire consequences of greed. The plot revolves around South African gold mines and a group of wealthy men who plot to destroy the way of life of one of the South African gold mine wealthy owners to tamper with gold prices in the global market. Once this gold mine is eliminated by flooding, the price of gold should go up making them rather wealthy. These men are ruthless and in their search for control, power and wealth, they are willing to put the lives of over a thousand men at risk. But, Rod Slater, played by Roger Moore is the manager who foresees the possibilities of catastrophic events and plans accordingly. Susannah York plays the role of the wife of one of the ruthless men, a hypochondriac who no longer makes her happy. She meets the character played by Moore and enters into an extra-marital relationship that deepens as the days go by. Thanks to Roger Moore's book, My Word is my bond we find out that because of Apartheid, the legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government of South Africa between 1948 and 1990, the trade union would not permit filming in South Africa. Much discussion takes place and finally, the crew arrives in Johannesburg in September of 1973 and was able to film without any political message portraying a difference between races. We also discover that the mines are real and as Roger Moore tells us; "to be faced with real conditions as an actor, helped him bring to life the character of Rod Slater." Reading Roger Moore's book has opened the door to a new way to enjoy these films because we know the tid-bits of information that would otherwise go unnoticed, making the film more interesting and enjoyable. If you enjoy film history, read the book and keep a list of the movies mentioned by Moore. See these through the eyes of the actor, sometimes director, and you will find yourselves immersed in a world of fun travel opportunities. Don't miss it! Review: Good movie of the 1970s. - Good movie starring Roger Moore.

Good Roger Moore flick...!!
Great story line. It did have "dead spots" where not much happened other than simple dialogue. But the action scenes made up for it..!!

Can't fault the blu-ray but film should have been better
The blu-ray looks great. I was just disappointed in the film itself. It was too long for the story it was telling. And, the acting could have been better. It was released during the disaster movie period but doesn't have enough of that. As a romance, it falls flat. As intrigue, it...well---you get the idea. Sorry, Roger.

Not one of Roger Moores better films
Gold is not one of the better outings for Roger Moore who played James Bond for so many films and some other great titles. I gave up on this boring film even though there are so many good people in the cast. It would have been a better outing if there had been a better script Susanah York, Ray Milland, and Bradford Dillman are wasted and I do not recommend this fimm to anyone who likes these actors

Dissapointed
It's a very poor copy. I remember watching this movie after seeing Roger Moore in Las Vegas many years ago when me,my sister Mary and brother Eric were ousted out of a casino because we were under age,We had been left outside waiting for our driver to pick us up. Mary and I were love struck and Roger seemed like a god to us.Love the story though. They don.t make movies like this one anymore.

A big movie adaption of a blockbuster novel set in the gold mining industry of South Africa. This is an old style, commercial thriller with a good old fashioned narrative. It's done very well, and these days it's like a breath of fresh air to watch such an unpretentious action drama fold out before you. There is much slightly quaint nostalgia about the movie too, shot in obviously apartheid SA, it gives subtle, rebelious little digs at the system, while showing a colonial bond with British culture that very probably wouldn't be shown or celebrated today. There is an air of sophisticated internationalism about it that the white South Africans have always loved and notably, there isn't an Afrikaans in sight, though there are racist white villains, most of whom are British. Much of the film, and most of the action, is set underground and looks very realistic to me. Roger Moore is good casting for the lead part of Rod Slater and shows how good he can be in the right kind of role. There isn't an eyebrow twitch in sight, and once again he proves how badly maligned he is as an actor, with many people wrongly convinced 007 was his standard movie persona. He gets good support from a typically feisty Susanah York and typically stuffy Ray Milland. Has a decent soundtrack and looks very good in widescreen, the right format for this kind of movie. Yes, I'd have thought of a different ending than the wrecking of a Roller on a slag heap, this was an unimaginative climax scene. Apart from that I've always liked the film, it is solid old fashioned entertainment the way films used to be made more and it stands up pretty well today. A good advert for 70s cinema, this. 4.5 gold stars.
