Extra useful for the tinkerers amongst us
We bought this for my son when he was little, and as-is it has been the perfect sleep time companion. However, in recent weeks we noticed the included power cable had worn through. It's no big deal, I'm more than capable of resolving it. Rather than opt for a replacement cable, I purchased some USB-C panel mount plugs, which is perfect since I always have them handy and no longer care to keep the warranty intact (great upgrade if you can swing it) Through the upgrade process, I noticed something I didn't expect. There was a MICRO SD card slot with a no-name 4gb card. Out of curiosity, I loaded into my PC, and was surprised to see that it was formatted as fat32 with raw MP3 files, organized in folders based on the button that is pressed. Each file is a 4hr long loop, but it's not necessary (at least it doesn't seem to be). Me being curious, I went to YouTube, found a public domain rendition of Brahms Luluby, loaded into a free online MP3 converter, and dumped it in one of the folders. A short reassembly proved that it worked! It seems to be a basic MP3 player that is set to repeat the current song and uses the buttons to select the playlist. Each song repeats without additional input. I finished my modifications, loaded it with tunes (I opted to remove all of the bird songs, but wasn't necessary), and now I have a fully functional, custom sleep machine. While am unintended feauture, would definitely recommend for those willing to tinker a bit. Aside from all of that though, the battery circuit could use a redesign. It basically runs in parallel with a blocking diode, which explains the poor battery life when plugged in with the batteries installed. It's enough to keep the USB from blowing up the battery, but not enough to keep the batteries and the USB from both powering the device. Would recommend picking one or the other to use. Notes for future models: USB C power, proper battery switch circuit, externally accessible SD for customization

Surprisingly good sound.
I wanted a sound machine instead of always using my phone for background ambience while I sleep. I live in an area that is prone to power outages during summer storms, and I wanted a way to maintain sleep sound that used conventional batteries as a backup, not dependent on USB charging. I thought I’d try this one but was skeptical of the sound quality. This machine surpasses my expectations. The sound quality is quite good and there are 24 options (each sound button can be pressed to choose one of three sound patterns). The volume is easy to adjust and is loud enough to be heard from a bedside table. This machine would be ideal for travel. There is a headphone jack if privacy is needed. There are two USB ports for charging devices when the machine is plugged in (not on battery power). I’ve already noticed an improvement in my sleep quality. I am pleased with this product.

This white noise machine is easy to use. Appreciate the variety of sound choices and the timer feature is very helpful. Excellent product and good quality for the price. Would definitely recommend this product to others.

A large range of sounds for an exceptional price
I read a lot of sound machine reviews before picking this unit. Price was a major factor, in that, if it wasn't good enough it wasn't so expensive to replace. A lot of people complained about the volume control not functioning well. Some people went to the trouble of opening the unit to spray the contacts on the volume control to try to correct the problem. I have owned a simaliar looking product (possibly the same manufacturer) for many years and have had to wiggle and jiggle the volume control knob to get a steady sound. So I knew what to expect with this unit. So far there has been no trouble with the volumecontrol. But, every so often it stops making noise. It immediately starts back up again. As far as I know it has never awakened me but when awake I hear it stutter now and then. Not a good thing for the unit to be doing and I am afraid it will someday not start back up. I am concerned for the units longevity. The types of sounds and being able to choose between three different forms of these sounds is amazing. I have found some very soothing sounds and I switch between these on a regular basis. I have owned many sound machines. Some of these machines are very compact for travel (hence the 3 stars for traveling). None of these machines have offered such a variety of sounds. As far as sounds go, they get 5 stars.

Excellent for what it does
Excellent for sleeping or napping. Runs on 3 batteries or a USB plug, can be set to run continuous (or shut off after a period of time if you want that). Has ocean waves, croaking frogs, crickets, white noise, pink noise, fan sounds and a lot more.

Better options out there, but still not bad ...
This is going to be an odd review for me, I admit. Even I am conflicted on this and what I feel about the product. This may be the first product that I have returned that I (tried to cancel before it shipped) ... I do not TRULY dislike despite some issues. I don't want to go super in depth but ... well here is some of my thoughts. Pros: - Price - Some of the sounds are really relaxing .. I had tested this using the bird singing option (My favorites are usually Ocean and Rain without thunder ... or sometimes with).... THIS IS ONLY ONE example though ... there are issues with one ... I will get to that later - The one test I did with an mp3 player lower on it's charge, charged find in one of the USB charging ports ... very handy to be able to just lean over and plug in or unplug something to a sound machine "right there" - (I ADMIT I have on no experience with this first-hand) I hear even when there are problems with units not working, the company REALLY stands behind their product and trys to make the customers happy ... it the products keep having issues (note in my short time, I cant say I noticed ANY issues with my unit), that is not great, but at least the company doing this really means something. - I see a number of reviews saying after say 10 minutes, everytime they use the unit, the sound goes out and then comes back in for no reason at say the 10 minute mark (note: these same people also say that the company reached out to them and made things right, as I said above)... In two nights of testing this ... that NEVER ONCE happened on my unit. - PORTABLE - if you did one to throw it in a bag to use when traveling - It may sound silly but I just like the button layout on the front ... not even sure why vs other units I looked at, but even using the unit for a few days... I like the way they did the buttons Cons: - The Ocean sound ... sounds off to me ... too artificial ... MAYBE due to another con, right below. IF you can picture say (picture the sound) "Wave coming in ... then a few seconds of it slowly going back out, where you hear that.... then another wave coming in" .... Unlike my two old model HoMedic's and even the new one I purchased ... it's like the "slowly going back out" between waves part was cut out of the sound loop they use .... it's borderline "White noise" or "fan" sounding ... I mean I don't want to go overboard like it's terrible or something ... but it just doesn't sound nature and since this was going to be for a gift and that may be the one this person uses the most ... I like the Ocean sound from HoMedic machines alot better. - Compared to a new model and even (before the internal speakers blew on it) HoMedic Sound machine ... it has a sound like a lower quality speaker or something .... I mean I am not expecting alot but just in comparison, there is more of a clarity or something with HoMedic Sound Machines I have - I don't want to go overboard here, but when I turned my unit off, there was a little pop or something from the speakers ... that I have heard before ... in my Radio Shack desktop speakers, that are from the late 1990's but still work. This is not a huge deal, but the other sound machines I have do not do that. - Volume knob - part 1: I have to say I have NOT noticed any static or odd sounds with any of the sound options ... I have my preferences, but none sound "terrible" ... what DID NOTICE that like some people said there was a problem with the volume knob ... it's like "hard" to turn to get the unit on, and after you twist it like a half turn or full turn (I forgot really) then it moves like it should ... If i kept this machine, I am sure opening it up and spraying some contact cleaner would help (it did on my HoMedic sound machine ... the model from say the last 1990's with the same issue), but this is a new item... one shouldn't HAVE TO do that. Though to be fair about it... this NEW Homedic machine I bought, have some people saying that over time they had to do the same thing ... though in my experience with that sound machine, turning it on what I'd expect right away ... not hard to turn on, like the knob is binding on something perhaps, at all - Volume knob - part 2: I did notice that right when you turn it on you don't really hear anything so you turn it up more, and then things are loud ... not SUPER loud or anything, but louder than you are likely trying to make the volume. I know some others said this happened to them, and it happened to me too. I COULD live with this ... there is like a few second delay before any sound starts I guess ... OR MAYBE that contact cleaner spraying around the volume knob fix, I mentioned, would work to help this to, I don't know - THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE here - I loved the Thunder + rain option, but I wish there was a "rain only" sound .. in place of maybe the "white noise" or "fan" option ... the fan one (note: i have a real fan on in the background alot of the time, anyway) is not bad at all .. but I just like the sound of rain WITHOUT thunder too ... I'd not want them to remove the "thunder" option, but just add one more or something. Summary: I have to admit even packed up... right before i put it in a UPS drop-off point to return... I hesitated ... thinking maybe I should wait and give this more of a chance. I just like the new model (even though this all was for a Christmas gift, I am thinking of picking up a backup for my old HoMedic unit, for myself) HoMedic a little bit better. The sound on two of the main sounds I like (rain and Ocean) sound better or more nature on a different machine, then this one. (The rain only option, is not even on this unit).. but I do like a few things like the USB ports that seem to charge and work just fine ... also the new HoMedic unit I have DOES NOT have a headphone jack and the only way my OLD HoMedic unit is in use now, is with external speakers plugged into that one's headphone jack, so that is a nice feature to have. Despite getting a refund and returning this ... I can't say I do not recommend this unit .. .I just can't for some reason. I even hesitated before finally going through with processing the return. I cant even say I'd never re-buy this again (not sure why I would but ... hey I have to be honest). For what I paid I am glad I made the switch and got a refund ... but hey ... may be the exact unit i sent back, someone else will enjoy and comparing the two units (this one vs the new model HoMedic) ... maybe they will like THIS ONE better. If you are reading this and ordered this already ... I'd give it a chance ... like I said ... this may be the first return I almost hesitated on... nut being 100% sure if i WANTED to return it despite a number of "issues"... I still cant say I "really didn't like it"

Good choice
I like the sound of the waves for my tinnitus because I love the beach and use only that one. There is variety enough to find your favourite. I like the timer with three settings and the choice to use the battery. With the timer the battery life will be extended.

Works well and is cost efficient
Works well so far. It has quite a few options although we only use the fan it could be interesting to try other options. What I like is the fact that it also works on batteries so in the middle of the night when the power goes out, the batteries kick in or if you go camping and there's no electricity, you still have your noise machine.

1st time. Ever used and love when traveling or power outages and needing a fan.
For the cost and value this unit is excellent. I’m using it for the first time in my hotel room during my annual work deployment meeting. Ventilation system is so loud, when it kicks on and off it used to wake me. I didn’t hear a thing last night I slept soundly the whole night. I didn’t hear people talking in the hallway. I love that it has the capability to be used when the power goes out with a few batteries I live in the country so power outages happen quite often and I find it hard to fall asleep again when I can’t hear the fan.
