Do you need a stethoscope to get a reading?

Actually no you don't. But if you want a diastolic number you will need a stethoscope. There is a way you can get the systolic number by palpation. It will give you an idea that your blood pressure may be on the high side then you can check with your doctor or local pharmacy.

Do you know of a mobile app that you like that i can use to log and track bp and other lifestyle factors to manage my hypertension?

I use the BP Companion on my iPhone. It's great. My doctor likes the printed reports I give them with all the readings and more. I highly recommend it.

my friend in India asked me to bring him a "mercury apparatus". Is this indian british for blood pressure cuff? Does any cuff use mercury any more.
