The Dead Travel Fast

I love the Lady Julia Grey mysteries for their impeccable research and compelling storytelling. Ms. Rayburn has eased quite effortlessly into a vastly different millieu, and she has spun a tale that leaves you wondering, even at its conclusion, whether vampires are real. The only weak point for me was the resolution of the love story, which came out of the blue and was unconvincing. Better to have had the count work to win Theodora in a way that would have revealed his transformation through actions, rather than merely to tell us that he had transformed. There was a whole subplot that got left behind. After the tempestuous Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane saga, the reunion between Theodora and the count was rather tame, and without any real suspense.

An excellent gothic. It moves steadily, is atmospheric without being cloying and its characters are interesting. This kind of novel has very strict outlines and rules, and this one ticks them all off, so if you like gothic novels, this one's for you. It is very well written. My only caveat is that it is utterly classic and does not seek in any way to challenge those boundaries or add original elements to the formula. But that's just me. I love the twist, the outlaw, and the outre. Raybourn still managed to keep me reading, even so.

This was an entertaining enough read, but not up to the level I've come to expect from Raybourn's Lady Julia novels. There is an interesting contrast between the intelligent and respectful way in which the author treats the folklore of the Carpathians and the often simplistic personal interactions of her main characters -- they are stock figures (spirited heroine, ominous housekeeper, darkly handsome but mysterious Count, etc.), their dialog is peppered with cliches, and they exhibit too many improbable motivations to be credited. Surely, real people do not behave in such ways -- even in gothic novels (and I'm prepared to suspend a degree of belief in the course of a good storyline). I won't reveal the best example of this implausible behavior, because it would ruin a plot surprise, but when it occurred in the storyline, it so beggared belief that it caused me to groan aloud. Furthermore, the relationship between the heroine and the Count is about as sophisticated as a Barbara Cartland romance. On the positive side, the plot twists cleverly, and the atmosphere is created so evocatively that one can share with the heroine the frissons she felt when the chill mountain wind carried the cries of wolves in the night. For my money, Raybourn's brilliant description of the mountain castle is the best thing in the novel -- it is almost elevated to character status. Overall, this novel could have been a wonderful and creative re-working of the gothic genre, but for me, it fell short of the mark.

Theodora Lestrange is living with her sister and brother-in-law in Scotland unsure of what is next in her life. She is trying to make a living as a writer, not easy in Victorian times. Her sister wants her to find someone to marry and her publisher has proposed marriage to her. But while Theodora is fond of him, she wants true love. So when a former school friend, Cosmina invites her to stay with her for several months in a castle in Transylvania, Theodora jumps at the chance. She thinks the atmosphere will be perfect for the novel she wants to write. She is immediately attracted to the strange Count Andrei Dragulescu, Cosmina's cousin. But Theodora finds that the stories Cosmina used to tell her in school are not just considered folklore by the townspeople and that they believe in werewolves and vampires. After a maid in the castle is found dead with fang marks in her neck, Theodora is unsure what to believe.my review: I enjoyed the author's Lady Julia series and was unsure what to expect of this novel. But I really liked the Gothic atmosphere and the creepy characters. Theodora is young but knows what she wants. I liked her a lot. I also thought Andrei sounded sexy even while I wondered if he was a vampire.I know some have been disappointed in this novel as compared to her series but I think I liked this one better. It was deliciously creepy and as it is a stand alone novel it didn't get bogged down with setting things up for future books. Of course I liked Theodora and Andrei so much that I would like it to be a series but then their relationship would have dragged on like Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane.This is not a paranormal book but a dark, thriller in an excellent setting. It seemed like the author really did her research and created a fantastic mystery. I would have loved to stay in a castle in Transylvania though I would have been scared silly. I thought that the ending had some nice twists and I was unsure what to expect for much of this novel. It was worth the read alone for the atmosphere but Raybourn served up much more. I was sorry to have it end. This is a definite re-read for me!my rating- 4.5/5

Having read the authors other books this was disappointing to say the least. Premise was good but over the top and contradictory. Like one of my sisters unrealistic zippy mills and boon novels. Yawn.

1858: Theodora Lestrange sollte mit ihren 23 Jahren eigentlich schon längst verheiratet sein, ihr leicht exzentrischer Großvater hat ihr jedoch große Freiheiten gelassen. Theodora träumt davon, eine bekannte Schriftstellerin zu werden. Eine Familie würde da eher schlecht in ihre Pläne passen und sie hat auch schon einen Heiratsantrag ausgeschlagen. Nach dem Tod ihres Großvaters stellt sich die Frage, was sie mit sich anfangen soll. Da trifft unerwartet ein Brief ihrer ehemaligen Schulfreundin Cosmina ein, die Theodora zu sich einlädt. Cosmina lebt in einem abgelegenen Schloss in den Karpaten und steht kurz vor ihrer Hochzeit. Die abenteuerlustige Theodora ziert sich nicht lange. Einerseits freut sie sich darauf, ihre Freundin wieder zu sehen, andererseits erhofft sie sich, dass sie in Transsylvanien eine Inspiration für ihren neuen Roman findet.In Transsylvanien angekommen, präsentiert sich Theodora ein erstaunliches Bild. Cosmina scheint seltsam angespannt und nervös, ihre Tante, die Gräfin, kränkelt, ihre Pflegerin hegt eine unerklärliche Abneigung gegen Theodora, der deutsche Verwalter des Schlosses ist von einer Aura unerklärlicher Traurigkeit umgeben und Cosminas Verlobter, Graf Andrei Dragulescu, ist ein charismatischer und doch düsterer Mann, der auf Theodora eine gefährliche Faszination ausübt. Dann wird sie auch noch mit unheimlichen Gerüchten über Werwölfe und Vampire konfrontiert. Geht auf dem Schloss wirklich etwas Übernatürliches vor oder sind das alles nur Hirngespinste?Ich muss sagen, dass ich etwas zwiespältig bin, was THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST betrifft. Ich mag die Stimmung des Buchs und die zahlreichen Elemente des Schauerromans, die Deanna Raybourn eingebaut hat. Transsylvanien ist erhaben und schrecklich zugleich und die Atmosphäre auf Schloss Dragulescu ist schaurig schön. Graf Andrei als unheimlicher und gequälter Held hat mir ebenfalls zugesagt und auch die Nebenfiguren konnten mich überzeugen. Die unheimlichen Vorgänge auf dem Schloss sind spannend und man ist wie Theodora selbst stets hin- und hergerissen, ob nun etwas Übernatürliches dahintersteckt, oder ob es nicht doch eine logische Erklärung für alles gibt. Das Ende von THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST weist eine packende Wendung auf, die mich jedenfalls überrascht und mir sehr gut gefallen hat.Trotz dieser Vorzüge wollte bei mir der Funke nicht so recht überspringen. Theodora, die Ich-Erzählerin der Ereignisse, ist zwar sympathisch, aber ich konnte keine Verbindung zu ihr aufbauen. Sie hat nicht unlogisch gehandelt, sie ist keine Mary-Sue und ich konnte ihr Verhalten die meiste Zeit nachvollziehen, aber sie hat mich emotional einfach kalt gelassen. Ich kann es nicht logisch erklären. Ich bevorzuge eindeutig Lady Julia Grey aus Raybourns gleichnamiger Serie, die über eine stärkere und eigenere Stimme als Theodora verfügt.THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST ist ein abgeschlossener Roman und ich glaube nicht, dass es eine Fortsetzung geben wird, da alle wichtigen Fragen geklärt wurden. Wer Schauerromane und gequälte Helden mag, der wird seine Freude an dem Buch haben.

Nachdem ich ein Fan von historischen Romanen bin und Raybourns Julia Grey Serie durchaus mag, hab ich mich auch an diesen standalone Roman gewagt ...Der Klappentext hörte sich interessant an und das Setting, sowie dessen Beschreibung überzeugte mich auch: ein altes Schloss in den Karpathen- eine interessante männlich Hauptfigur, wenn man auf den geheimnisvoll-dunklen und getriebenen Typ Mann steht ;)...Das wars denn aber auch schon: die Protagonisten bleibt merkwürdig amorph und unnahbar, zu distanziert- zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich nicht wirklich ein herzliches Verhältnis und das sollte bei einem historischen Romantikthriller nun doch der Fall sein ... Irgendwann gegen Ende- so nach 2 Dritteln, begann ich mich zu langweiligen und legte es dann zwecks anderweitiger Neuerwerbungen (denn der SUB/RUB ist groß;)) zur Seite, nachdem mich der Schreibstil und die Geschichte immer mehr an Victoria Holt erinnerte (ja es ist peinlich, dass zuzugeben aber mit 17 hab ich damals alle gelesen und fand sie toll ...); aber nun gut inzwischen sind meine Ansprüche an ein Buch gestiegen ...Ergo:Handlungaufbau, Charakterte, Spannungsverlauf/vorhersehbarkeit: -allein für das Setting gibt es ein +, aber das allein macht kein gutes Buch aus ...Insofern für eine leichte Lektüre zwischendurch empfehlenswert zumal , wenn man historische Schmonzetten mag, aber ansonsten sehr durchschnittlich. Damit reiht sich die Autorin in die Mainstream Vamipr/Dracula romane ein die einem zur zeit überall verfolgen ...Meine Erwartungen an eine interssante Gothic Novel haben sich leider nicht erfüllt ...Tendenz zu 2,5*
