Great starter bike
We purchased this about a month ago and it’s been a great intro bike for our three year old. We purchased the 14” model and it’s a perfect fit, our boy is currently about 40” tall and he rides this on the lowest setting. He went straight from a three wheel trike with the pedals at the front to this and was pedaling on his own within minutes. We did lube everything up after assembly and feel it rides very smoothly. We did get this on sale and while I feel that the normal price is probably worth it, I’m glad I didn’t have to pay that! I do like that it doesn’t look like a little kid’s bike or have characters on it, I think that makes it more versatile and something less likely that he’d lose interest in. Overall, a solid choice for a first ride.

Best First Bike!
This Schwinn Koen is the perfect first bike for my 4 year old son! I chose the 16” wheels as he is just at the bottom of the height range so he has room to grow into the bike that it will last us a couple years. His peddling experience was between a big wheel and a classic trike, so this did take a few minutes of practice for him to get used to the resistance of peddling this bike and the factor that peddling backwards brakes the wheels. He is 39” tall - I kept the handle bars at the height they were set to and installed the seat at the lowest height. Assembly took less than an hour solo, the bike comes mostly assembled with a few pieces to be added on. My son LOVES riding his new “big kid bike” and I’m at a light jog to keep up with him! It won’t be long before we’re taking the training wheels off.

A Great Bike for Smaller Kids
Reading some of these reviews had me a bit concerned. I believe that many are written by individuals expecting the bike to arrive ready to ride. This is not the case. You should avoid making this purchase if you are not mechanically inclined. With that said, assembly is not difficult. This will include adjusting the hand brakes. These are the items usually already done for you when purchasing from a bike shop. A lot of reviews mention issues with the crank bearings failing. I believe this is caused either by they way the bike is shipped or by kids dropping the bike on its side too frequently after removing the training wheels. That is because the crank housing is plastic. It’s the only thing that is lacking of typical Schwinn quality. When the bike arrived at my house, it was clearly marked not to place the package on its side. The delivery person did so anyway. Before I even pulled it out of the box, I checked to make sure it was not damaged and that there were no missing parts. Good to go! This is a very nice kid’s bike and my son loves it. The bike is fairly lite for having a steel frame. If your kids requires an 18 inch model or smaller, I would recommend it. If you are looking for a 20 inch model, I would consider another model or brand, especially if your kid is an aggressive rider. Good luck!

Great bike but the shipper has never assembled a bike before
I'll start with this is a great bike. That said, the person who pre assembled this bike had no clue what they were doing. The front brake levers were literally vertical, the rear wheel end nuts so loose they would have fallen off, and the inner rear wheel nuts were so tight they pinched the rear wheel so tight it wouldnt even spin. Don't even get me started on the actual brake pad setup on both sides which most people aren't comfortable dialing in. I would have rathered they sent it disassembled honestly. It took 15 minutes to set up, and more than an hour, plus a visit to the bike shop to make it functional since they wrenched the inner rear wheel nuts so tight I couldn't even address the issue. The setup was so bad I felt like I needed to check everything just to be comfortable. So... Great bike quality and components for what it is worth, but DO NOT ride out of the box. There's some sketchy assembly line stuff going on there.

Perfect Proportions
I bought the red version from Amazon Warehouse (Like New). The box had been opened before but the bike was not put together before. The number plate was missing a screw and the sticker on the front was scratched and ripped. Not a huge deal. The bike went together easily however some things needed adjusted. The steering tube had a notchy feeling so I backed off the top nut a half turn and that fixed the issue. The chain and rear wheel (pre-assembled) were also very tight but I was able to loosen that up a bit. The rest of the assembly was simple and I didn't need the manual (it's a bicycle, not a rocket engine). As for the ergonomics and the SmartStart system, I think it's fantastic. This bicycle looks like it was made for a child's body. It's not all scrunched up like most children's bikes and the proportions are perfect for my son. Really impressed. My son is 42" tall and has an inseam of ~17 inches. The 14" bike is perfect for him AND he has room to grow. He's able to put his tippy toes down which gives him confidence and he still has enough room to comfortable pedal. VERY happy with the purchase. This is the perfect child's pedal bike and the price is likely the best on the market. HIGHLY recommended.

Missing Part, Continuing Problems with This Bike - Avoid!
I purchased this bike for my 6-year-old little boy after he outgrew his first bike, a 14" Specialized we purchased from a local bike store. After dealing with the Schwinn Koen Boy's Bike, I really regret my choice to purchase it and wish we'd spent a bit more on a better bike. So problems abound with this bike. First, the instructions aren't great and seemingly designed to cover a range of bikes rather than being purpose-made for the Koen. I haven't assembled too many bikes so I felt a little underprepared to tackle the assembly for the Koen given the rather poor instructions. For example, the front brakes on the bike required adjustment as they weren't properly making contact with the wheel. The instructions completely omit that. Thankfully, I was able to find a video to watch online of a similar bike and make the adjustment. Our bike was also missing the assembly that holds the bike seat in place and unfortunately, I didn't assemble the bike until right before my son's birthday wanting to keep it a surprise and all. This meant that his newly assembly bike was unrideable until we received the proper component. The missing component isn't even pictured in the instruction booklet nor is a parts list included! Receiving the right part was a hassle too since (surprise!) there's no part number to give and Schwinn does not take responsibility for the bike instead offloading that to a different company - Pacific Cycle to get the component shipped. I'll spare the details but it wasn't a smooth process and after ignored emails and the wrong part being shipped, I finally received the correct component almost 30-days after making the initial purchase. After all that drama we're still experiencing problems with the bike. My son still uses training wheels (we're working on that) and the training wheels come dangerously loose all on their own. This happens despite me using tools to fully tighten the training wheel bolts. Our experience with the bike is a shame because it looks really good and my son loves riding it. But this is the first and last Schwinn bike my household will buy. Definitely not recommended!

Outstanding kids bike for the price.
This 18" bike was purchased for a 4.5 year old (46" tall) who is riding without training wheels. Despite reservations that this bike would be too big, it is the perfect size with the seat down all the way and there is plenty of room to grow. Assembly took about 20 minutes and the only tools that were needed was an Alan wrench, socket set and Phillip screwdriver. Most of this time was actually spent unpacking the bike which was wrapped heavily in cardboard and other protective material. Actual assembly time was closer to 10 minutes. The only fine tuning required was the front break and everything else went together smoothly. I liked how the handlebars are adjustable so I was able to angle them inward for the shorter arm reach. I did remove the plastic number plate off the handlebars because I didn't like the look. Otherwise this is a sharp looking and sturdy kids bike that should be good for two to three years of use. I also liked that it came with a kick stand which most other bikes tend to come without these days. This is a shout out to Amazon Warehouse Deals for a Used - Very Good item that only had a banged up box and otherwise appeared brand new for $60 less than a new bike. Most sizes and colors had numerous items on Amazon Warehouse Deals so there is a good chance you'll be able to save some money on this bike. Funny thing is this item actually came with two sets of pedals, when most items tend to be missing parts, so if you get this item and are missing pedals let me know and I've got you covered.
