The follow-up to 2014's Bury Me At Makeout Creek - which was hailed by Pitchfork as “a complex 10-song story [containing] some of the most nuanced, complex and articulate music that's come from the indiesphere in a while,” - Puberty 2 picks up where its predecessor left off. Musically, there are subtle evolutions: electronic drum pads pulse throughout, underneath fervent guitar lines. The 25-year-old cuts the same defiant, feminist figure on Puberty 2 that won her acclaim last time around. Born in Japan, Mitski grew up surrounded by her father's Smithsonian folk recordings and mother's 1970s Japanese pop CDs in a family that moved frequently: she spent stints in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, China and Turkey among other countries before coming to New York to study composition at SUNY Purchase. Sadness is awful and happiness is exhausting in the world of Mitski. The effect of Puberty 2 however is a stark opposite: invigorating, inspiring and beautiful. It was put together with the help of long-term accomplice Patrick Hyland, with every instrument played between the two of them. Review: Excellent album. - Grandson loves the album. It looks impressive too in white. Review: Cheap - Excellent price. Couldn't find cheaper.

Puberty Blues.....
Having picked up buckets of praise on both sides of the Atlantic, I'm puzzled as to why this album hasn't taken off here or collected more reviews on Amazon. Love 'em or hate 'em the critics are bang on the money with this one, and I'm more than glad to have taken a chance on it. Born in Japan and now residing in New York, Mitski has recorded three albums prior to this one and despite its title, 'Puberty 2 is not a sequel. I think I get where she's coming from though with the second puberty. When you outgrow your first you don't immediately lose all of the angst, the insecurities and disappointment. Alarmingly bookended with what sounds like a scratched c.d. 'Happy' is a case in point, detailing as it does the hollow disillusionment the morning after a one night stand, underlined by stabs of stuttering sax. Mitski's candour throughout this album is astonishing, she's clearly a lady with nothing to hide. On 'Your Best American Girl' the culture clash between oriental girl and western boy is sadly highlighted, "Your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me". Apparently written around a true personal incident she continues, "I guess I couldn't help try to be your American girl". 'I Bet On Losing Dogs' and 'My Body's Made Of Crushed Stars' are the type of conversational titles much loved by the likes of Morrissey and David Gedge, the former a heart wrenching number swathed in synths, the latter a punky thrash of doubled up acoustic and fuzz guitars that's in and out like quicksilver. Sounding like a band but actually just Mitski and producer on all instruments, the tracks swing from uptempo wig outs like 'A Loving Feeling' { always probing, always questioning } to the melancholy of 'Crack Baby' { it aint big and it aint clever kids! } I detect traces of St.Vincent, Torres, Beth Jeans Houghton's 'Du Blonde' and even a smidgin of Sharon Van Etten in this music, so if any of those float your boat then I recommend that you climb aboard. Pay off track 'A Burning Hill' has an air of resignation about it, but for all it's heart on sleeve honesty this album soars high and above mere self pity and in it's all too brief 31 minutes, Mitski has delivered a bold and extremely listenable statement. Let us hope that like our own Gemma Ray she's not going to be another fine artist to be ignored and undervalued.

its quite standard rock sounding stuff but Mitski has a beautiful voice and is a very good song writer
Not exactly reinventing the wheel, its quite standard rock sounding stuff but Mitski has a beautiful voice and is a very good song writer. There are some lovely melodies on this album as well as interesting sounds and composition choices.
